  • Gameday is terrific. Of schools in the Big Ten, Ohio State alone is Nebraska's equal when it comes to the total package -- the outside-the-stadium stuff, the sheer amount of video boards and pageantry, the pregame introductions, the game presentation itself. Nebraska sees itself as the ideal, the model for how it should be done, and although it can all seem a bit Olympian, if Rutgers fans get there, they'll be impressed.

My how impressed we are with ourselves! Do those video boards show that legendary moment in program history when Scott Frost gave John Cooper a BJ?

    • UNL is a very worthwhile trip. It's a different gameday experience from OSU in that tailgating anywhere near as prominent. But being able to walk from downtown/area to the Stadium is an attractive feature. And the actual game experience itself is fantastic.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
      Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

      • Oh I'm sure it is. Would love to go! My brother and I were going to go for what would have been the Bellamy game but it just didn't pan out. But during tailgating for UNL's first trip to the Big House I was pretty impressed with their fans, and they were pretty impressed with Michigan. Huskers fans seem pretty allright. But any excuse to remind them of what a cocksucking bunch of SEC types they were in '97 is fine by me. It still amazes me that any coach who holds himself out to have some sorta value system would let Frost sit on the podium and trash Michigan in that way the morning of Jan 2. Lloyd as we all know went from cagey competitor to sentimental/judgemental pretty fast, and I wonder if that episode had a lot to do with how he was turned off by the whole thing. The accomplishment of your professional lifetime and here's some 21-year-old jackass doing his best to shit on it in a way you would never let your players talk. Disgusting.

        • Hack... Our facilities are great. I'll get you a tour if you visit. Tailgating is not that good and UNL has other warts or faults, but we spend on facilities.

          • How did Frost "trash" Michigan?

I do recall Bob Griese giving his son a BJ the day before and practically handing the MNC to Michigan before the Orange Bowl was even played...how is that any better than what Frost did?

            Just askin'...

                • It's absurd Ent...Frost was simply lobbying for a split title...which itself is absurd because Nebraska was better than Michigan clearly (OMG here it comes)...but our schedule was clearly better...we had to win a CCG game (by 39 points)...beat a clearly better bowl opponent (25 point win over #3 vs. 5 point CONTROVERSIAL win over #9)...but Michigan was so much better? WTF? It's absurd! Michigan is fucking lucky they got a split because had NU and UM played it would have been ugly. UGLY.

UM fans are still butthurt 17 years later? Really? Is it because we have won 3 of 4 since then? Or because deep down they know they are really lucky to have hid in the Doze Bowl back then? NU would have beat UM bad. BAD. Worse than we smacked Tennessee and Purty Peyton.

Get over it M. You got lucky with a split. Not us. NU was clearly better.

                  • 6 hours ago • By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star

James Barsotti has been a Fresno State football season-ticket holder for about 15 years now. Same seats all those 15 years. It’s a family tradition that shows no signs of stopping.

He’s seen some good games in old Bulldog Stadium — with its checkerboard end zones and room for 41,000. Ole Miss showed up in 2011 and got the Bulldogs by 10. Wisconsin made the trip in 2008 and nipped them by three. Even Oregon dropped by for an appearance in 2006, about the time the Ducks were claiming the throne as the fashionistas of college football. Ducks won that day, but only by a beak.

But mostly, perhaps explained by some of those close calls, Pac-12 teams won’t sign up to come to Fresno.

“They’re glad to play us in their house, but won’t return the favor,” Barsotti said.

When one of the big boys from a Power 5 conference does show up, it’s not just appreciated but seized upon in a serious way. Barsotti likes to read the reviews of the experiences from opposing fans after those games. He still remembers well what Badger fans thought.

“All their fans were saying, 'It’s not at all what we were expecting, it’s so intimate, the fans are right on top of the field.'”

The trek from locker room to field is something of an experience in itself. As Barsotti points out, opposing players “have a pretty good-sized walk into the stadium” through a parking lot and down a ramp into the stadium, surrounded by barking Bulldog fans and a blaring band.

Known by Bulldog fans as “The Red Mile,” the walk has been described in different ways by opponents, but quiet has never been one of them.

“I think there’s this mentality that we’re the little guy and we really want to beat the big guy, and the community really comes up and puts everything into it for those games,” Barsotti said.

So you can understand the considerable enthusiasm of Bulldog fans about Nebraska coming into their den Sept. 13 for a night game that won’t end before midnight back here.

While it’s hard to know exactly which red-clad fans are buying up the most tickets — Bulldogs or Huskers — it is undeniably a hot seller.

Fresno State’s athletic department has opened up a limited number of single-game tickets on four separate occasions on its GoBulldogs.com website. Despite a single ticket selling for $130, just $10 lower than some season-ticket offers from the school, the first pre-sale on Feb. 3 sold out in 6? hours.

In the other three pre-sale opportunities, available tickets didn’t last a day. Nebraska fans are fully involved in the proceedings.

The pre-sales were, in fact, done to give Husker supporters a chance to buy tickets for the game without eating up Fresno State season-ticket inventory, which some NU fans have been known to do in the past — buying another school's season tickets just to go to one game.

At ticket windows closer to home, the Husker athletic department has had approximately 4,500 requests for the official allotment of 3,850 tickets they were given for the game. That number only means so much. There are, of course, many avenues to find tickets.

David Max, who runs the HuskerMax website, has put together a travel package and tailgate event for the game that will include appearances by former Huskers Vince Ferragamo and Willie Harper. Some members of the Beach Boys are even scheduled to perform. So far, he’s sold about 700 tickets.

And Californians for Nebraska, which drew about 2,200 to the UCLA game in 2012, is putting together a bus package from Los Angeles that includes the tailgate.

And then there's the caravan coming from Las Vegas.

That’s where Husker fan Chad Stevens lives. He’s traveling to the game with about 28 people, including a bachelor party. They’re taking two RVs and renting a 15-seat passenger van.

Tickets were no small penny but they’re all between the eighth and 10th rows. Bulldog Stadium isn’t to be confused with the Rose Bowl, and in some ways, that’s a selling point.

“It’s nice to get that more intimate feel, so close to the field,” Stevens said. “I’ve probably been to 75 home games and only had real good seats twice.”

Fresno State fans, meanwhile, are eager about their home opener after a 2013 season that saw the Bulldogs win 11 games and the Mountain West championship under Tim DeRuyter, who has gone 20-5 in his first two years leading the program.

There was a wait-and-see type of approach from Bulldog fans in 2012, said Jason Clay, Fresno State assistant director of communications. But after DeRuyter rattled off nine wins, it was clear the community was ready to invest itself in the program. There have been whiteouts in the stadium, blackouts and, last year, three sellouts.

There is some retooling that needs done with the 2014 team, including replacing quarterback and second-round draft pick Derek Carr. But DeRuyter has given fans no reason not to hope.

Among other things, Barsotti said DeRuyter’s fast-paced spread offense, which according to College Football Matrix was the eighth fastest in the country at 3.24 plays per minute in 2013, hasn't hurt in winning people over.

But it’s not just the Nebraska game Fresno State fans are eager to see. Before that, the Bulldogs have road trips to USC and Utah. It's quite the three-game run out of the starting blocks.

“There’s a lot of buzz for the USC game,” Clay said. "And when you get opportunities like that to play major teams at home, our history has shown that our fans really gravitate to it.”

The final single-game tickets for the Nebraska game go on sale Aug. 2 on the Fresno State website. It's expected to be the earliest sellout for a game in school history.

Barsotti will be in his regular seat, a fan of the Bulldogs, but also of a good spectacle.

“I’m a big college football fan, period,” Barsotti said. “I’ll watch anybody play. I don’t care. But there definitely is that added excitement with a team like Nebraska. In my childhood, I always used to watch them play. Now they’re actually coming here.”

                    • Gold Medalist Burroughs Hired As Assistant Coach

Nebraska Wrestling Head Coach Mark Manning announced the hiring of Husker legend and Olympic Gold Medalist Jordan Burroughs as an assistant coach for the team on Friday.

“We are pleased to announce Jordan as one of my top assistants,” Manning said. “Jordan is one of the best wrestlers in the world and his accomplishments speak for themselves. We want him to continue to win World and Olympic titles until he completes his career. Jordan and his wife Lauren have made a commitment to be a part of Nebraska Athletics for a very long time. I along with the wrestlers and staff are glad to have the influence, mentorship and knowledge that Jordan brings to Nebraska wrestling. He has been a part of Nebraska wrestling for the last eight years and will continue to be a tremendous ambassador for the University of Nebraska.”

Burroughs previously served on the Nebraska wrestling staff as an administrative assistant for the 2012-13 season. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in sociology in May 2011.

“This is a huge stepping stone for my career and for Nebraska wrestling,” Burroughs said. “These are great facilities, people and tradition, and I’m extremely happy to continue to be a part of it. Now I get to look at things from the inside-out, whereas before it was from the outside-in. I want us to win team championships.”

A native of Sicklerville, N.J., Burroughs joins the staff in the midst of one of the most successful international freestyle wrestling careers in U.S. history. In addition to claiming the 74-kilogram Olympic Gold Medal at the 2012 Games in London, England, Burroughs won a pair of FILA World Championships in 2011 and 2013. He is also the three-time defending U.S. Open champion and two-time reigning World Cup champion.

Burroughs has earned several other titles during his post-collegiate career, including the 2011 Pan American Championships, 2011 U.S. World Team Trials, 2012 Olympic Trials, 2013 Alexander Medved Championships and 2013 Stephan Sargsyan Championships. In addition, he won his first 69 matches on the senior circuit.

Following the IOC’s initial recommendation to drop wrestling from the Olympics in February 2013, Burroughs became a key advocate to keeping the sport in the Games. In September 2013, the decision was overturned and wrestling will remain in the Olympics.

In 2011, Burroughs completed his decorated collegiate career with a second national title and claimed the Hodge Trophy Award. He went 36-0 as a senior at 165 pounds and also captured 2011 InterMat Wrestler-of-the-Year honors.

Burroughs’ first NCAA crown came in 2009, when he posted a perfect 35-0 record at 157 pounds. In 2009-10, his season was cut short by a torn PCL and LCL after racing to a 7-0 start.

The three-time All-American finished third at the 2008 NCAA Championships with a 34-6 record. He won a Big 12 title during the same season and added conference crowns in 2009 and 2011. Burroughs completed his college career with a 128-20 record, the fourth-most victories in school history. He also holds the fifth-best career winning percentage in Nebraska history at .865.

There you go with that SEC behavior. At Michigan we let what we did on the field do the talking for us. And, it was pretty reasonable to expect that Michigan was going to be the outright given the precedent set by the Nebraska/Penn State situation in 1994, so I dunno your complaint about Griese. In fact in the wake of Bill Simmons behavior on TV when the Celts were on the clock at the NBA Draft two weeks ago, Griese's handling of himself during the Rose Bowl stands out as highly professional. You're welcome to go back and look. That's how you behave in this world if you want like what you see in the mirror. Not that ``will do anything for a polls-based victory'' SEC bullshit in your program's recent past. We didn't need our QB sucking off John Cooper and we didn't need illegal plays. You shoulda joined the SEC.

                          • Frost was a player. Griese was a TV analyst. Frost wasn't paid. Griese was. In fact Griese was paid to be objective and unbiased. He wasn't. Big difference.

Still I didn't get worked up about Bob's homerism...but I do get worked up when you bitch about Frost's actions. Let it go. 17 years ago bro.

                            • Griese was. He was going by precendent. He should have thought about the fact that Nebraska was going to go the SEC route.

He was. If you want I'll send you my copy of the '98 game and you can hear how it was called by Jackson and Griese.

I have, indeed, let it go. To some degree thanks to you Huskers here, who add a lot with your presence. However any time some Nebraska slappy takes a shot at Michigan, I think it's only reasonable to expect something back. And, in the end, Nebraska let Frost up there to do that. Nebraska owns his behaivor and that won't change. It was terrible behavior.
