        • NU's Olson hired as hoops assistant at NDSU

April 15, 2014 11:57 am • By BRIAN ROSENTHAL / Lincoln Journal Star

Another member of Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles' coaching staff is advancing in the profession.

Jayden Olson, who spent the past three seasons as Miles' director of operations at Colorado State and Nebraska, has been hired as assistant coach at North Dakota State.

New NDSU coach David Richman announced the hire Tuesday.

“Jayden’s pedigree, work ethic and, most importantly, his character were exactly what we were looking for when putting together our staff,” Richman said. “His ties to North Dakota and the area, along with his knowledge of the game, make him a great fit.”

Olson is a North Dakota native who was an assistant coach at Augustana College from 2007-10 before joining Miles staff at Colorado State. He spent one season as video coordinator there before being promoted to director of operations, where he spent one season before following Miles to Nebraska.

“I’m elated to join Coach Richman’s staff and the strong tradition of North Dakota State Athletics and Bison men’s basketball,” Olson said. “Being a North Dakota native, having a chance to work in your home state is something you dream of, and I look forward to doing my part in helping to build on recent successes.”

Administrative coordinator Teddy Owens, who joined the Nebraska staff before last season, is among the candidates to replace Olson.

Olson is the second member of Miles' staff to depart Nebraska for a job promotion in the last month. Miles' longtime assistant, Craig Smith, was hired as head coach at South Dakota on March 24.

              • Georgetown transfer says yes to Nebraska

9 hours ago • By BRIAN ROSENTHAL / Lincoln Journal Star

The Nebraska men’s basketball team has filled a recruiting need for next season – an experienced big man.

Georgetown transfer Moses Ayegba, who made an official visit to Lincoln on April 12, confirmed Wednesday night he’s finishing his career with the Huskers.

“I just loved the place,” Ayegba said. “I loved the coaches and the players, and it seemed like the right fit for me.”

Nebraska is expected to announce the addition of Ayegba on Thursday. The Huskers have been looking for a frontcourt player to contribute primarily in rebounding and defense, although Ayegba declined to say anything about his potential playing time next season, noting that's a conversation he wanted to keep between himself and NU coaches.

Ayegba, a 6-foot-9, 247-pound center, is a fifth-year senior. He’ll be eligible to play immediately after he earns his undergraduate degree in May.

Ayegba said he “spent four good years at Georgetown” but was looking for a change. This season, he played in 31 games and averaged 13.1 minutes, 1.9 points, 2.8 rebounds with 23 blocked shots.

A native of Kano, Nigeria, Ayegba came to the United States in 2009 and attended Progressive Christian Academy in Maryland. He played in six games as a true freshman but sat out his sophomore season, in 2011-12, after tearing the ACL in his right knee during a summer league game.

Nebraska assistant basketball coach Kenya Hunter first recruited Ayegba to Georgetown, convincing him to choose the Hoyas over Texas, Kentucky, Florida, UCLA, Connecticut, Tennessee and Indiana.

Ayegba said his relationship with Hunter played a key role in him coming to Nebraska. Indiana, Boston College, Miami and Long Beach State also showed interest in Ayegba as a transfer, he said.

Ayegba will arrive in Lincoln this summer after he graduates from Georgetown.

                • Jordan Cornish, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound shooting guard from New Orleans, has been released from his signed letter of intent at Tennessee and is considering a visit to Nebraska.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Wednesday that Cornish was granted his release after Tennessee initially denied the request on Monday, and that UCLA, Oregon, Wake Forest, Nebraska and Southern Methodist are schools Cornish been in contact with.

Jonathan Ford, a recruiting reporter in Louisiana, tweeted that Cornish told him he was visiting Nebraska, UCLA and SMU.

Cornish signed with Tennessee in November, choosing the Volunteers over Purdue, Wake Forest, Oklahoma and Houston. He asked for his release after coach Cuonzo Martin left Tennessee for California.

Cornish averaged 20.9 points last season for Brother Martin High School.

Nebraska currently has three scholarship openings for the 2014-15 season. Georgetown transfer Moses Ayegba, a fifth-year senior who's eligible immediately, visited Lincoln on April 12 and is expected to make his decision this week.

Another possibility for the 2014 class is juco forward Deng Deng, who was visiting Baylor on Wednesday, and is expected to also make an official visit to Lincoln in April.

Nebraska coach Tim Miles and assistant coach Kenya Hunter were on the road Wednesday visiting 2015 prospect Glynn Watson, a point guard from Westchester, Ill., who's also considering Iowa and Creighton, among others.

This year you won't even start setting up by the time we were at halftime for most games last season. More scheduling weirdness...but in a good way. 11am games sucketh.

So, instead of sending Nebraska coach Tim Miles a congratulatory tweet on a great season, Izzo got in front of the camera and delivered a personal, tongue-in-cheek message to Miles that aired at the Huskers team banquet.
