The Nebraska soccer team exploded in the second half to pick up a 4-0 win at Purdue on Friday evening. Following a scoreless first half, Nebraska got goals in the second half by Mayme Conroy, Katie Kraeutner, Jordan Jackson and Caroline Gray to pull away for the win. Jordan Jackson had a huge night, finishing with a goal and three assists. NU has won eight of its last nine matches and is 5-1-0 in the conference and 10-3-1 overall. The Huskers are currently alone in first place in the Big Ten standings. Huskers.com has a complete recap along with a photo gallery. GO BIG RED!

      -----------------

The Nebraska rifle team fell just short in Sunday’s match against West Virginia. The Huskers fell to the Mountaineers by a score of 4,650-4,656. Freshmen Lauren Phillips and Rachel Martin each shot personal bests in the smallbore and air rifle. Maggie Mical finished third overall in air rifle to help lead the way for Nebraska. The Huskers host Navy on October 26. Fans can check out a complete recap of Sunday’s match at huskers.com.

Y'know, ever now and then its OK...especially against a crappy opponent. You just kind of watch the game in lieu of partying it up, then you have the rest of your saturday to do stuff.

Three in a row, and four out of five, is excessive however. Especially as the season progresses, and the morning temperatures drop.

It's been a rough start to practice for the Nebraska men's basketball team, as far as injuries are concerned.

Tim Miles, speaking at a Monday news conference at Memorial Stadium, said Tai Webster, projected as the Huskers' starting point guard, has missed four practices with a sprained ankle and isn't certain when the true freshman will return.

Miles said he'd be surprised if Webster wasn't back by next week, but pointed out he's missing valuable practice time as a newcomer.

Also, freshman walk-on Tim Wagner suffered a "gruesome" dislocated ankle injury in practice and will miss the season. Wagner underwent surgery and had eight screws and two plates inserted.

?That?s a tough one," Miles said, "because Tim is a kid I really enjoyed having in our program, and he was just starting to figure things out, and able to go out and practice pretty well.?

Junior college transfer Leslee Smith has been slowed by knee and hamstring issues, and true freshman Nathan Hawkins missed a couple of practices with a concussion.

                        A couple of other notes:

                        * Miles said the team, by ballot, has voted Shavon Shields, Terran Petteway and Ray Gallegos as team captains.

Note, two of those guys are sophomores, including one, Petteway, who hasn't even played yet. But Miles said Petteway, a Texas Tech transfer, is without a doubt the team's hardest worker and most relentless competitor.

                        * Miles said he expects Walter Pitchford to make some big contributions this year, and noted how the sophomore, who sat out last season as a transfer, is making strides in being more consistent. Miles said Pitchford was up and down last year "like an EKG. Now, he's only a roller coaster."

                        * Nebraska will practice today at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Miles said he'd like to practice at least one-third of the time during the preseason at Pinnacle Bank.

                        • ***Quarterback Taylor Martinez (foot) remained out of practice on Wednesday. Head coach Bo Pelini said Martinez was scheduled to do some running during the practice, but the staff decided to hold off on that until his customized orthopedic shoes arrived.

***After missing the past month with his turf toe injury, Pelini said he wasn't worried about Martinez's level of conditioning when he finally does return to action. Pelini said conditioning has never been an issue for Martines, and the senior has done a lot of biking and other forms of cardio to stay as in shape as possible.

***Asked if he felt optimistic that Martinez would return as Nebraska's starting quarterback next weekend against Minnesota, Pelini said: "Yes I do."

***Pelini said further x-rays on senior guard Spencer Long's knee revealed that he suffered a torn MCL. Pelini said the good news was that Long didn't also tear his PCL as originally thought, meaning his recovery should be faster than expected. However, Pelini said Long has been ruled out for the season, including the bowl game. Pelini said they're just hoping Long can recover from the injury quickly enough so that it doesn't affect his NFL draft stock.

***Pelini said Nebraska has been having another productive bye week so far. He said the Huskers went "all good-on-good" on Tuesday and then half of the practice on Wednesday with lots of fast-tempo work.

***Pelini said he's received no further clarification from the Big Ten office on the targeting penalty on Stanley Jean-Baptiste against Purdue. Pelini said he planned to contact the league in the next couple days to ask for their take and reasoning on the penalty. He said he's spent "a lot of time looking at it" on film in slow motion, and continues to hold his belief that Jean-Baptiste's hit was "a good football play."

***Pelini said he won't be going on the road recruiting this week, but Nebraska will have eight coaches hitting the recruiting trail over the next few days.

***Pelini said Long's expected replacement as the starting right guard, Mike Moudy, was a good player who the staff has a lot of confidence in to step up and fill Long's shoes. Pelini said Moudy has come a long way since the start of spring practice, and Moudy said he's been working exclusively at right guard this week in practice.

***Redshirt freshman receiver Alonzo Moore may not be showing up much in the scorebox, but Rich Fisher said he's playing at a very high level right now. Fisher said now that Moore has a better understanding of the offense his athleticism is starting to show more. For instance, Fisher said Moore had a catch in yesterday's practice that was almost identical to the one-handed grab Kenny Bell had against Illinois.

***Fisher said he's been very pleased with the play of Jordan Westerkamp's play as a receiver and especially as a punt returner. Fisher said Westerkamp has natural hands and will continue to get better production in the punt return game.

***Defensive coordinator John Papuchis said he's been pleased with the growth at the linebacker position. He noted that the staff is particularly excited about what this group could become in the weeks and years ahead as well.

***Ciante Evans said he thinks the defense has been able to make a jump over the last couple of weeks because the young defenders have learned how to prepare. He said that was an issue early in the year.

***Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa said he currently boasts a 350 pound bench press and 540 pound squat max in the weight room. He also joked that he's glad people don't ask him if he's going to move to tight end.

***Recruiting coordinator Ross Els said the Huskers took a little bit longer scheduling their recruiting visits this week because they saw most of their top guys over the first bye week, but they are still seeing some players they like this week. He said they believe they will find some more senior gems like they did last year when they were able to snag players like Cethan Carter and Maliek Collins late.

It all started with a 36-second period fall over Bobby Nash in the opening round of the 2011 U.S. Open in Cleveland.

The last five victories, at the 2013 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, came less than a month after he suffered a broken ankle.

In between, there have been victories over eight different Russians, including two over two-time World champion Denis Tsargush. He?s also defeated Olympic silver and bronze medalists along with World silver and bronze medalists.

He owns wins over wrestlers from 22 different countries en route to capturing two World titles and an Olympic gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs.

The 65-match international winning streak of the remarkable Jordan Burroughs, the longest in American history, is definitely a thing of beauty.

Burroughs owns freestyle wins over wrestlers from virtually every corner of the planet, including victories over athletes from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.

He has earned wins over six NCAA champions, including two Hodge Trophy winners, at the Senior level.

Burroughs has won with the old rules and he?s won with the new international rules which were implemented by FILA midway through 2013. He?s won matches in New York City and Los Angeles while also prevailing in places like London, Istanbul, Budapest, Havana, Minsk, Baku and Tehran.

He?s only 25, but Burroughs has won freestyle titles in 11 different countries at the Senior level in just three seasons of competition.

Burroughs has won the last 101 times he?s stepped on the mat after going 36-0 while winning his second NCAA title in 2011 as a senior at Nebraska.

And his impressive run is not done yet. Burroughs plans to compete through the end of this Olympic cycle in 2016.

                              • The Big Ten Conference boasts a financial model that no other college athletics association is willing to adopt.

Iowa Hawkeyes wide receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley (11, center) blocks Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back Tyvis Powell (23) as running back Damon Bullock (5) runs past in the second of their game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus last Saturday. The 117-year-old league, of which the University of Iowa is a member, shares television and postseason revenue as do many conferences.

But the Big Ten also splits its football gate receipts from league games, a step devoid of other conferences. Thirty-five percent of Big Ten home gate receipts ? with a $1 million cap and a $300,000 floor ? goes to the league office.

From there it?s distributed into 12 equal pieces.

Big Ten officials collected more than $36.4 million through gate sharing for the 2012 season, and each school received $3.038 million, according to documents obtained by The Gazette through the Freedom of Information Act.

Seven schools, including the UI, lost money on the share. The UI, Penn State, Ohio State University, the University of Nebraska and the University of Michigan contributed $4 million and lost the maximum of $961,828.86.

The University of Wisconsin and Michigan State University lost more than $860,000. Indiana University ? which contributed only $300,000 in three of its four games ? picked up an extra $1.722 million as one of five schools benefiting from share.

The UI generated more than $13.3 million in gate revenue from its four 2012 Big Ten games, ranking fifth in the league. Today?s opponent Northwestern, a private university, was ninth, with less than $5.6 million.

Seven Big Ten schools earned at least $11.2 million from home gate receipts, while the five lowest combined for $25 million, barely edging Big Ten leader Michigan ($24.776 million).

                                Big markets

The schools that gain revenue through the model ? such as Northwestern ? often contribute in other ways. Northwestern resides in suburban Chicago, the league?s largest market.

Big Ten members Illinois, Indiana and Purdue boast nearly 20 million people within their combined borders, which contributes to television revenue.

For Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta, sharing gate receipts is just one component of a much-larger revenue share within the conference.

?It?s an all-in,? Barta said. ?You can?t fairly evaluate one without looking at the big picture. We choose to share revenue.

?There are areas where Iowa probably is a giver and there are areas where Iowa probably is a taker. In the long run, we all benefit.

?It?s tempting to take one piece and want to evaluate it. But the only way to do it is to evaluate the conference as a whole.?

The UI earned more than $26 million from conference sources in fiscal year 2013. Although sharing football gate receipts amounts to a fraction of the league?s distribution of bowl or television revenue, it does show a spirit of cooperation unlike any other conference.

The Gazette polled the other four power collegiate conferences ? Big 12, Southeastern, Atlantic Coast and Pac-12 ? and none share football gate receipts.

?It?s very important philosophically because it was the first real commitment on the financial end, that our schools recognized that great things can be achieved by the collective good to share revenue in a way that?s beneficial to all,? Big Ten Deputy Commissioner Brad Traviolia said. ?It?s important to continue.

?It?s worked well for us. It?s a trust and a camaraderie among our institutions that?s been developed over a century. It?s part of who we are.?

                                Roots in the 1930s

Roots for the sharing plan were set in the 1930s, when visiting football teams earned half the home receipts. In the early 1990s, after several stadiums were renovated and added seating, the schools? financial officers opted for even allocation.

?In the old model, if you happened to be traveling to Ohio State or traveling to Michigan or traveling to Penn State all in the same year, and they got 50 percent, they?d get a windfall,? Traviolia said. ?But if you?re going to three stadiums that don?t seat 100,000 people, it will be much less.

?Throwing it all in one pool and spreading it out kind of smooths it over. So from a revenue standpoint it doesn?t matter who you played in one year.

?All that money is going to the same pool,? Traviolia noted.

Gate sharing survived expansion in the 1990s with Penn State and in 2011 with Nebraska. It continues next year when Rutgers and Maryland join the conference.

The numbers will evolve slightly in 2016 when the league enters a nine-game schedule, but the model will remain.

In an era when schools leave tradition and conferences for extra revenue, the Big Ten?s model is unusual, to say the least.

?In terms of our gate, without our history of it starting decades and decades and decades ago, I think it would be awfully hard for any conference either existing or a brand new conference starting today to convince their membership that giving up the gate to some of their conference brethren is a great idea,? Traviolia said. ?It?s something that?s worked very well for the Big Ten. It?s proven to help in the success of the conference, and our schools have all bought into that.

?That?s unique to history, and it?s been something that our schools have been supportive of, the existence of the conference. I really don?t see that changing.?
