  • They didn't lose a Jerel Worthy this year, but they did lose Gholston. Still, every year further away from RichRod is a major downgrade in what they put on the field and a major upgrade for us.

    • They also lost a corner to the NFL, IIRC.

      • Fuck 'em. I can't decide if I'd rather see D'antonio slink out of EL once he realizes he can't win, or if I'd rather see him stay and be pummeled into submission. Either way, I'd like to see our kids take this game more seriously for a little while. It would be awfully fucking fun to beat them two years in a row in their own stadium.

        • I recall that a first class coach named Nick Saban departed MSU because (allegedly) he was unable to dominate UM for football talent. I think institutional traditions at "big brother" also had something to do with it. We do have a deep reservoir of support and intangible advantages over our "little brother" up the road.

But we haven't been immune to overconfidence and the occasional down year. The RR years OTOH were a huge aberration.

No doubt about the RR years being an aberration---you have to go back nearly a half a century to the late-60's to find any real domination by sparty in the rivalry, as they pretty much owned the 50's thru most of the 60's. I think they were something like 14-4-2 over us for those 2 decades.

This year will be the toughest of the two. Win this one, and if Gardner returns for his 5th year, we might actually embarrass them. M will be that good in '14.

I'm hoping that Dantonio is one of those guys who sticks around at least a few years after his time and allows the program to rot.

                • He really is a good coach. I think he'd be desireable elsewhere.

                  • Dumtonio's not going anywhere. He's a spartie-for-life; he thrives on his hatred of Michigan. Take that away and his fuel is gone.

                    • Good. He can retire failed and angry.

                      • Unless he can start recruiting top ten classes, he's on his way out. It may take a while for Hollis to admit that Dantonio has to go.

Sparty will not be able to compete for the B1G title by recruiting the way they are now. Hoke is eating Dantonio's lunch in both Michigan and ohio.

                        • With so little leftovers in Michigan, Sparty will struggle to win 8+ games going forward.

                          • On the other hand, he's a better coach than the others they've had recently. Seems unlikely he'll be canned.

                            • He's probably good enough to win 7-8 games on a somewhat regular basis. I think that Dantonio is a better coach then Frerentz and he has put together lots of good seasons.

                              • The utter lack of respect from M fans for Dantonio's abilities always surprises me. In this 4th and 5th years at MSU -- when the program was truly his -- he went 22-5, won a B10 title and then won a division title. Last year they took a step back, but every loss but the ND game was 4 points or less. They were right there.

Further, the types of difference-makers he gets aren't kids that Coach Hokattison and their recruiting machine will go after. Jerel Worthy? No. LeVeon Bell? No. Johnny Adams? No. I can go on and on.

That staff does a really nice job of developing players and coaching defense. Michigan will out-talent them, no doubt, but I wouldn't discount Dantonio. Hell, he's accomplished more as a HC than No-Titles, as painful as that may be for M faithful to accept.
