re: Michigan, they've had ridiculous attrition thanks to two recent coaching changes since '08. It's been a problem since the '05 class that Hoke just recently is slowing the trend...

You're the one who made mention of KSU running players off to open up scholarships, I don't know if that's true, you'd know better than I would. I just notice them signing a ton of JUCU's every year who only are good for a couple years in your system. Like I said above, KSU has the luxury of offering more 'athletes' without an in depth evaluation than someone like Nebraska.

The numbers show otherwise WM, as I stated.

Another example: Michigan State.

81 players signed 2010-2013.
78 preps
3 JUCOs.

21 fewer total players signed than KSU, but 10 more high school kids...and they didn't even utilize their entire allotment of 85.

Again, how quickly JUCOs cycle through doesn't matter; its the 85 number per year that does.

This isn't to say that Wild Bill only goes after blue-chip prep kids; far from it. He takes on project players every year. But he does have to be selective in which ones he takes given the JUCO-tightrope he walks.

Its typically not a problem for him because he's extremely detail-orientated, but he doesn't just cast a net for any warm body to come in. If he's offered Kenzo its because he sees somebody he can make a player out of. Nebraska should be thinking the same thing.

I agree Michigan's numbers are high during that timeframe due to attraition. Maybe the next few classes will be smaller, IDK; so far Hoke is averaging 26 players in his two classes and on course for 100+ in four years. Don't get me wrong, I have ZERO problem with those numbers. In fact, I find them to be ideal...not too "SEC", and not too "Nebraska".

I think so. But if 27 is your high- in lieu of 33 or 31 every other year- you won't get there.

Then there's the thought of what's better...having a scholarship massacre every other year SEC style, or weeding out a handful of players each season.

Since I wrote about Nathan Gerry heading into South Dakota's state track and field meet, the responsible thing to do is tell you how he did at said meet.

Answer: Quite well.

He won the 100 meters (10.69 electronically) and the 200 (22.30). Must have been some tough conditions during the 200 today. Gerry actually ran a meet-record 21.7 in the prelims yesterday and posted an electronic 21.52 in the race earlier this year.

Still pretty good stuff for a 6-foot-2, 212-pound man.

His 4 x 200 team also finished first. His 4 x 100 finished second. And his high school team finished first overall.

Gerry didn't get the record he was chasing in the 200. Honestly, that would have been tough to top. That record of 21.1 seconds has stood 87 years for a reason. (By the way, we don't have any reason to doubt the precise accuracy of a stated record of a race run in 1926 in South Dakota, do we?)

Anyhow, four golds (counting the team gold) and one silver for Gerry. Not a bad weekend.

Next weekend's plans? Moving to Lincoln.

These are fast times indeed for Nathan Gerry.
