I'm for Europe taking the lead helping Ukraine to prevent Putin from achieving his objectives there and by most measures, they are doing that. I'm opposed to some kind of backroom deal that assuages Putin. That's because he will use any respite in the fighting to resupply his depleted forces and at the appropriate time strike Ukraine again. He has not given up on his maximalist view of restoring the Russian "empire" to it's rightful power position in world affaris.
I've held this is a bad idea for as long as I've been posting about the war here. On the grand strategy level the US gives up it's global standing as the flag of freedom and democracy and forfeits that to the aligned autocratic Axis powers (Iran, Russia, NK) with China on the sidelines for now watching to see who prevails. I don't want these dictatorships calling the shots which, IMO, is what's at stake here.
I posted up thread that there are enough signals out there that suggests Trump's worldview is that he will make "America Great Again" and that doesn't include seeding America's place on the global stage to Russia or China. Despite criticism that Trump is an isolationist, I don't think that pathway forward is consistent with his character and beliefs. The only backroom dealing that's likely to take place is that the US will continue to covertly arm Ukraine with the sophisticated capabilities it needs to keep the bear at bay. The EU will assume it's rightful role of continuing do the heavy lifting to arm Ukraine. It will also take the lead in constructing a post war infrastructure that includes rebuilding Ukraine as well as coming up with the collective security arrangements against any further Russian efforts to advance Putin's agenda to it's conclusion.
