  • ....... in case you want to read about the now regular theater in the House and Senate over spending bills:

The Senate has passed a Republican-led six-month spending bill hours before a government shutdown, overcoming sharp Democratic opposition to the measure.

                  • Both sides continue to try to control the narrative through the press. In both instances, The narrative design intentionally fails to correctly depict the facts on the ground. ISW does a good job of laying out the disposition of ground fighting forces on a daily basis and the link below from the Kiev Post summarizes the most recent ISW update. The ground forces of the UA and RA continue to trade blows but the gains by either side, even collectively, lacks tactical or strategic significance - this conflict remains a stalemate.

That this conflict is so different from previous major conflicts makes it difficult for war watchers and military analysts to assess who is winning and who is losing. Technology and AI is reshaping the traditional battlefield making intelligence, always important, even more so. Trump recently reinstated full intelligence cooperation with Ukraine after suspending it. Suspension was a huge hit to Ukraine and it's restoration levels the playing field. It also provides some insight into what the Trump administration's intent with respect to military and economic support for Ukraine actually is. The narrative regarding the US ending it's support for Ukraine is mostly a false one, IMO. The reality is that this conflict is far from over and a long way from the cease fire sought by negotiators from the various parties involved.

As well, while Trump is depicted as siding with Putin and his uncompromising objectives, the reality is probably quite different. Giving up America's lead on the global stage is inconsistent with Trump's world view and that would likely happen if Putin is actually successful in conquering Ukraine. Can Putin continue to fuel his war facing a dedicated European coalition supplying the necessary fuel to Ukraine to wage war aligned against him? Is the US really backing out of the coalition of the willing to oppose Putin? I, along with other analysts, have doubts.

                        • Wait. Why are you posting this. I thought Trump ended this war on day one?

Well, he did say he was being "a bit sarcastic." In any event given Putin's uncompromising stance on his objectives in Ukraine - unchanged from days after the invasion in February 2022 - he has zero plans to give up anything in the faux negotiations the press has gotten breathless over. Who's going to prevail in this war of attrition? The Russians historically have the upper hand in this circumstance. The totalitarianism that has characterized the Russian government for decades provides a shield for Putin - he can pretty much order whatever he wants to sustain this war. More soldiers, more defense related spending never losing political capital - for now.

I think there are reasonable logistical limits to Putin's continuing his war given the kind of hybrid warfare being waged. The Russians have adapted well shrinking Ukraine's advantages in waging a hybrid war. But still, Russian military doctrine which is highly centralized, keeps the Ukrainians with the advantage. So, I think simply keeping this going despite the human costs to Ukraine is a reasonable COA,

                              • Putin has gotten himself into a situation where he can't be voted out. He controls everything. So he has not population to answer to. He can continue to fight a war of attrition as long as he wants.

Kind of like what would have happened here in the US had LBJ continued to be president. He would have kept us in Viet Nam for the rest of his life. Fighting a war that he had no intention of winning.

For Ukraine, the best thing for them might be to admit defeat and let the Russians have what they have already taken.

For me personally, I think the US should stay out of it. The 1900's were filled with years where Americans by the thousands died for Europe. I think we've done enough. Let Europe take care of Europe.
