There's a video on the web from a webcam that caught the collision; the American Airlines flight was turning to final and was close to alignment with the runway. The helo was on a course perpendicular to the flight path of the America Airlines aircraft at 200 feet and from the video, it looks like he didn't see the blazing landing light of the AA flight and flew right into it at a 90 degree angle. The AA flight crew was focused on the landing area probably inside of 1/4 mile and at 200 feet. They probably never knew what hit them broadside as there's a huge explosion when the two aircraft collided.
I have a spin class with a Jet Blue Pilot. He said that both aircraft were equipped with collision avoidance systems that warn of impending collisions. The helo's system was off is what he heard. He wasn't sure about the AA flight but it is standard practice to turn that on in the descent/pre-landing check lists.
Here's my point. The media will jump on any action or comment by Trump and couch those in derogatory terms so as to make him look bad. I'm not defending anything he said. He'd have been much better off not making any other comments about the accident except it was tragic and the appropriate government authorities are on the scene and will be looking into what happened. But no. Trump is a dip-shit and does stuff like this to frame his comments in his politics. Nothing to see here other than the accident is a tragedy.
