Every once in a while I'll see a tweet where someone wonders why so few people live on the California coast between San Francisco and LA and considers this "wasted space". It's because the mountains rise up almost immediately from the ocean and like I said previously they are more dirt than rock. Which is a very unstable place to be when there's a quake. There's only a few pockets of relatively flat land on that whole 500 mile coast. Man can't always conquer geography.
