Suppose someone said, “I don’t want to vote for Kamala. She is so stupid, and what little she offers in terms of policy is mainly the same recycled, damaging central planning that progressive politicians have been promoting since the days of Franklin Roosevelt — and I don’t even know if she is smart enough to recognize that. Yet, I can’t vote for Trump because I truly hate him as a person.”
I’d get it. I understand.
I would likely judge such an opinion as shallow. It’s a fool’s bargain to choose bad policies over bad manners.
Still, I get it. Human beings are emotive and relational creatures, and when someone is consumed with hatred towards another, often, nothing else matters. Hate tends to be a jealous passion—it doesn’t like the company of reason, prudence, or any of the virtues.
What’s intriguing, though, is that people voting for Kamala don’t express regret, embarrassment, or disappointment. They appear quite gleeful about casting votes for her. The prospect of voting for Kamala fills them with joy—that is what they say.
I've read progressives on social media claiming their faith in humanity has been restored by Kamala Harris. No joke.
These are the same individuals who complain, weekly, daily, that everything seems so expensive—that they are now choosing which necessities to buy and which to forgo because their dollars simply do not stretch as far as they used to. Their insurances are going up; grocery bills going up; all other bills are going up; EVERYTHING is more expensive.
Yet, basic living expenses are going to increase even more under four more years of Biden-Harris-FDR central planning, as shortages become more acute and prices continue to rise.
The same people excited about voting for Kamala seem to oppose war. They typically show indifference to dead infants, often insisting they’re not human, unless those infants are "Palestinians" caught in the crossfires of war.
Around the world, there are warmongers looking for excuses to deploy armies, shoot people, drop bombs, and steal what belongs to others. Who among those warmongers is scared of Kamala Harris?
New wars broke out when Joe Biden took office, and more conflicts will likely emerge under a Harris administration. What reason is there to expect otherwise? Kamala Harris met with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in person. 72 hours later, Russia invaded Ukraine. Some deterrence, eh?
For the Platonists among us—we few who have pondered the question, “What is the good?”—we understand what it means to vote for a candidate or policy that is less than perfect. We have a standard by which to distinguish what is truly good from what is the best possible option available in our current circumstances.
Whatever progressives may be, they are certainly not Platonists. This is why they can be excited when the same bad ideas that fueled bad outcomes in the past are recycled and presented anew. They cheer. They become giddy. It's so shiny! Add a few celebrities and pop music icons, and it becomes a national fiesta!
Still, it is perplexing to witness so many people—including college-educated citizens, many with advanced degrees and various licenses, certificates, and other credentials—to be so optimistic about voting for someone who is going to make the problems we have, worse.
Let us be clear: When someone points out that Donald Trump’s policies are not perfect, that he also wields government power to spend too much of other people’s money and drive up inflation, we should acknowledge it. It is true. The most problematic aspects of Trump’s policies are his policies that are the most progressive.
The fact that Trump errs in the direction of wasteful progressive spending programs and government control over citizens does not make Kamala Harris an excellent candidate. If Trump is guilty of being too progressive—and he is—he spends too much, restricts civil liberties too much, and fails to address adequately the looming and giant problem of the administrative state—how does one “feel” knowing that in these respects, Kamala Harris is even worse?Shut the fuck up Donny!
