While the DNC is occupying the front page, a subtle shift in the dynamics of the war in favor of Ukraine is ongoing. This is not to dismiss RA advances in western Donetsk Oblast in the Chasiv Yar direction. Securing the entirety of the Donetsk Oblast is an important objective for the RA, and taking control of Chasiv-Yar brings that goal closer. It is an ongoing operation with snail like advances but favoring, over time, the RA's sheer numbers and depth.
But, the Kremlin is clearly concerned about Ukraine's incursion into the Kursk Oblast, publically downplaying the military operation and instead focusing on terrorism. Putin is characterizing the operation as a terrorist attack recalling such an attack by Chechen separatist Riyad-us Saliheen Brigade that took over 1,000 adults and children hostage in a Beslan school over three days in September 2004, resulting in the deaths of more than 330 people, including 186 children. A really bad look for Putin raising protestations from the civilian community most involved. While Russia appeared to deal with the terrorists and initiated an investigation, now ongoing for 20 years, Putin is stressing how he properly responded to the terrorist attack then like he will respond to the Ukrainian terrorist attack ongoing now. It looks like the public isn't buying that line. There is a significantly elevated risk of civilian protests in the Kursk Oblast that could threaten the Putin regime.
Not being publicly disclosed but a hot topic among Russian milbloggers is the redeployment of front line RA troops from the Donetsk operations to Kursk. The UA intent is to slow the advance of RA forces in the Chasi-Yar direction. Too soon to tell if that is happening. As reported, Ukraine has destroyed the only three bridges that allowed the evacuation of civilians and introduction of reinforcements to the Kursk operation. It seems likely that Ukraine has isolated whatever is the RA fighting force in the Kursk Oblast, and will solidify control of key terrain leading to the capture of an embarrassingly large number of Russian troops and equipment.
Observers and analysts are writing that the Kremlin's response to the UA incursion has been chaotic and similar to the response that allowed the UA to quickly regain control of Kharkiv and rout the Russian army from the entire Kharkiv Oblast in early 2023. The biggest problem according to those writing about this is that there is no central command structure and that multiple agencies and general officers are being assigned to deal with the "terrorists." No single commander is coordinating action - exactly what happened a year ago in Kharkiv. In general, the chaos reveals what is a chronic problem with the Russian armed forces. They are so heavily structured, they are unable to react quickly and decisively to the surprising ingenuity of the Ukrainian armed forces.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
