LOCAL NEWS Michigan AG Dana Nessel announces charges against former Michigan House speaker Lee Chatfield

Read the article. Nessel dropped any charges relating to criminal sexual conduct.

Interesting to see that a public officer embezzling $ 50.00 or more can result in a ten-year jail term.

Thanks for the answer. I noted in the article the local Native Americans were upset, but didn’t know what real impact it would have other than their lost tax monies.

                • I know there are those here that do not believe sending aid to Ukraine is among the top national security issues. Boarder security is. OTH, opponents of aid to Ukraine, tether themselves to MTG and her band of populist, right wing, extremist whackos. This caucus is putting gaining political leverage and brownie points with DJT ahead of legitimate concerns regarding Putin's expansionist plans. Russia is making significant gains in Ukraine and Lavorov stated today that Kharkiv, Ukraine's 2nd largest city, as an explicit objective. This is reflective of the RA's offensive successes since January of this year contrasted with Ukraine's flagging defensive operations along the entire front.

I've made it clear where I stand on this and so, today's passage of the military aid packages for Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel is a big deal for me. It may or may not be too late and the logistics of meeting Ukraine's list of critically needed kit is a confounding factor on improving Ukraine's armed forces facing a resurgent and re-filled Russian military. It's not all roses for the Russian military though. They have their weaknesses, manpower not being one of them, hi-tech war fighting capability is.

It remains to be seen if Ukraine, newly stocked with new western arms and technology can restore momentum. I'm concerned with "too little, too late" and political forces pushing Zelenski to start negotiations which include seeding territory to Russia. If you don't think that sort of conclusion to the current hostilities is unacceptable, then you're not accounting for Putin's revanchist world view.

                  • In light of the quick and overwhelming support for the Ukraine aid package the House passed on Saturday one has to ask two questions: 1, why did it take months to bring this bill to the floor for a vote? 2. Do we really have representative government? Over two years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a majority of Americans (58%) continue to support the United States providing military and economic assistance to Ukraine, including eight in 10 Democrats (78%) and a slight majority of Independents (54%).

That we are even talking about the problems the bill faced in congress ignores the second question. We simply don't have representative government. When a handful of right wing whackos can derail the concept of representative government is, to me, astonishing.

It's because McCarthy allowed changes to House rules that made it significantly easier for just a handful of assholes to repeatedly paralyze the govt.
