  • Mike, thanks for that response. There are ways to escalate towards the objectives you laid out without really executing them exactly as you stated. We can do better than "open" with the targets you suggest.

First, the escalatory phase may, and probably has, already started. Blinken's ME tour of all concerned nations on-going right now is a signal that he's letting people know that the US is not going to be a bystander in this. The time has come for Arab states to reign in Palestinian groups that are advocating terror and the destruction of Israel. These groups, and in some cases down to the leadership level, are constantly tracked by the security apparati of every Arab state that has a stake in this. Talent's marco questions and the answers apply. Failing that, the US will enter the conflict full force.

Second, Sisi has to be elbowed into opening the Rafah crossing into the Sinai. He has no legitimate reason not to do that considering the circumstances. I suspect there are secret talks going on between Netanyahu and Sisi to do just that. The other Arab League states need to pressure Sissi to open Rafah. Put SIsi's military down there and create an organized mechanism to track and place Palestinians in the Sinai. This would be a good place for the UN to get involved.

    (1) Genocide; (2) Peace. This isn't hard.
Correct...... and the first step is to force the armed Palestinian semi-state actors to stand down by arm twisting the Mullah's in Iran if necessary. Mike's targets, the threat of attacking them (escalatory steps), are the stick to carrot of peace.

Damn, we should be in charge!

            • Jim Jordan wins the secret vote nomination this time, 124 to 81 over Austin Scott. Long way to go to win a floor vote. And that vote total suggests 12+ Republicans either didn't vote or didn't even show up. They might not be able to even hold a floor vote today.

                              • I'm focusing on football today. IMO, the mainstream news reports covering the conflict in the ME are pretty sketchy, lacking detail. ISW is providing very detailed reports (link below).

What I took from this update is that the conflict is confusingly escalating. I've always had problems following all the Islamic Jihadist groups. Iran's strategic objective has been identified as working over time to surround Israel with countries supportive of Iran's strategic objectives - the destruction of the Israeli state. That would require a convincing defeat of the IDF.

From 10K feet it appears that any one of these groups is not equipped to face well organized and equipped IDF units. Right now, we really have no idea how ready the IDF units that are forming from the call-up of 300,000 reservists. It can't be great but, who knows. There is absolutely no question the IAF can sustain air superiority over the battle space. When you talk about conventional warfare air superiority is required for ground forces to operate effectively. However and typically, Jihadist groups fight unconventionally. I have to assume the IDF has trained for that and is prepared - to what degree is unknown at this point.

For Israel to claim victory will require the neutralization of the present leadership. It appears that is one of the IDF's goals and they are pursuing it by relentlessly targeting with munitions delivered by the IAF the tunnel system built by Hamas to store weapons, fighting units and command centers in Gaza. The apparent opening of a northern front by Lebanon Hezbollah (LH) complicates this. At this point, from a military perspective, it is hard to predict any kind of outcomes - strategically and tactically. The political situation is also unclear. Ultimately, it will play a big part in outcomes.

Hamas continued conducting rocket attacks into Israel at a lower rate of fire on October 13 compared to previous days. Hamas began reducing its rate of attacks on October 12 to conserve its rocket stockpile and prepare for a prolonged war, as CTP and ISW
