  • Well it doesn't seem horribly gerrymandered since Democrats only have a one or two seat advantage in both houses of the legislature. That's representative of the state as a whole.

Compare that to Wisconsin which votes close to 50/50 every election yet Republicans control 2/3 of the state legislature.

Simply put, the Republican party in Michigan is wacked and doesn't seem interested in aligning itself with anything "moderate"

And, well, there's Detroit, where Eisenhower was the last Republican to receive a vote from them.

            • There are some interesting politics on the global stage the last couple of days interspersed with some granular detail of what Ukraine is accomplishing or not in it's counteroffensive - on going now for over two months.

The G20 Economic Forum is meeting absent any Russian or Chinese participation. The messaging is unmistakable as BRICS is seen by both of the G20 absentees as a counterweight to the G20. Biden is in attendance and extolling India's economic clout as the US moves farther away from Russia and China and closer to India economically. Generally, the west's collective efforts to isolate Russia are not uniformly embraced by the global south. China is rumored to be providing military aid to Russia and if not directly, they are moving closer to supplying the ammunition Putin is short of through NK. Kim would not be meeting with Putin to "strengthen Russia/NK military ties" without Xi greenlighting it.

On the battlefield, an online source I read, War on the Rocks, offers analysis of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in some detail using open source reporting. It carefully tracks the locations of Russian and Ukrainian fighting units, especially the commitment of reserves, and builds a picture of success or failure from the movements of these units. Ukraine has not yet committed its reserves in any definite manner where it is clear the Russians have. Movements of Russian units laterally (from one place to another) demonstrates their concern for reports that Ukrainian forces are advancing in an eastward direction in the direction of Melipitol on the Sea of Azov.

There has been a shift in the way sources are characterizing the battle from seizure of territory to attrition. The UA is incorporating small unit tactics (as opposed to large scale mechanized attacks) in a tradeoff to secure less territory in exchange for inflicting higher attrition rates on the RA. This strategy appears to be working as estimates that attrition is around 1:3 in favor of UA. There is no question that the RA is suffering from a lack of artillery ammunition and the capability for counter-battery fires. UA spokespersons are asking that gains in attritional warfare take precedence over reporting territorial acquisition. There is no end in site for the war in Ukraine as both sides remain entrenched in their goals with neither side willing to compromise. That Ukraine appears to be winning the war of attrition gives them a reason to persist and provides an impetus for Putin to find an exit strategy.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                • This is the first time Michigan Ds have controlled both houses in 40 years. They last won the Senate in 1984. The Trump faction is just a gift that keeps on giving... like herpes.

Yeah I was gonna point out that Republicans controlled the state Senate for like 40 unbroken years...and they controlled the Senate from 1939 to 1965 too.

In a lot of the states that Trump contested in 2020, the state level GOP is now broke and in flaming ruins, staffed by MAGA morons.

Not in Georgia though where the establishment GOP was strong enough to resist President Deals.

It's almost like there is correlation AND causation.

It's worth noting that in terms of the Electoral College map Trump (or the R candidate) needs to flip swing states that Biden carried in 2020. Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona are three of them and their state parties are in the "broke and flaming ruins" camp you speak of. Not a real good situation. Throw in Wisconsin and Georgia and it's a massively uphill battle for Trump that he will not win.
