Recap of today's events in Russia? ISW hasn't done their usual evening recap. It's usually done by 7pm. Nothing. Meduza has little news that I haven't already seen on the wire services. I've stopped wondering; stopped speculating about what's going on in the Kremlin. To me the news coming out of Russia and Belarus reflects chaos. Reports trying to make sense of it dominate. You can't make sense of it. What's worrisome to western leaders, as Crash points out, is the question of who's controlling access to Russia's nukes in the motherland and now in Belarus. If they haven't been moved from Russia to secure location in Belarus yet, as easy as it was for Wagner PMC to quickly head to Moscow on M4 with zero resistance from Russian Rosgavardia or FSB, a nuke being transported by road to Belarus would be easy pickings. There is little news of the military situation in Ukraine as of this post.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. A review of the news in Ukraine and Russia - it's early afternoon there - reveals some clarity;
Battles resulting in incremental territorial gains in the vicinity of Bakhmut and further south near the city of Donetsk - the two Ukrainian axis of their counter offensive continue. Nothing startling is happening. The grinding continues. Russia continue cruise missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities unabated. Ukraine's air defenses shoots most of them down. ISW assesses that the Russians lack sufficient reserves to reinforce against multiple Ukrainian axis of attacks simultaneously. You can assess that Ukraine is working to spread Russian defenses as thinly as possible by making them defend multiple fronts.
Wagner PMC in Russia is being dissolved. It is likely to continue it's organization and mercenary role in Africa and elsewhere where Russia has military agreements with governments there. Putin has granted granted mutineers broad immunity and articulated 3 options for Wagner commanders and fighters: (1) Sign contracts with the Russian MOD, (2) end military service with Wagner and go to Belarus, (3) Rejoin Wagner forces at camps in Belarus being constructed at Lukashenko's directives. There is a lot of ambiguity in all of this. Analysts do not think Putin is going to let Wagner commanders or Prigozhen go unaccountable to him. Prigozhen's whereabouts are unknown.
in the last 36h, Putin has been going out of his way to appear to the Russian public and other world leaders to be present and in control. He has praised the Rosgavardia for, "preventing a civil war." He then goes on to order more heavy weaponry to be allocated to them. The irony there is unmistakable. He claims that under his orders, the FSB and Rosgavardia were instructed to not fire on Wagner forces. The poor defense put up by Russian agencies tasked with dealing with things like the Wagner crisis, resulted in the death of 13 Russian airmen and 3 aircraft - an IL22 Command, control and EW platform and two EW equipped attack helos. These losses were assessed by ISW to be critical to Russian C&C and EW efforts in Ukraine.
Shoigu and Garrismove are still in. ISW states that there is a likelihood that there will be a shuffling of commanders going forward but Putin is not going to move on any of his generals until time has passed so as not to be perceived as giving in to Wagner demands. Russian pro-war milbloggers provide names that might move up suggesting that this community generally favors the replacement of the MoD Defense Minister and his principal force's commander, Garrisimov.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished.
