Sometime I’ll do an updated rundown of the country’s top 100 cities and it’s generally something like an 80/20 D-R split.

Except for like a 4 year blip Ohio has been dominated on the state level by Republicans for about 30 years. In the past two years one of the largest bribery scandals in US history has happened here and it’s not affected their control in the slightest. But on the other hand control has stayed with R’s that are more Bushie than Trumpy. For now.

        • Democratic cities have third world areas yes. Been to Frisco? Portland? Seattle? Chicago? NYC? Denver? There are areas that look like a fucking nuclear bomb exploded.

            • I think Froot and Wizard just have a difference of opinion as to what is good/bad. People pooping on the sidewalks and needles everywhere and rampant shoplifting is an absolute feature of D policies and something to be celebrated. But, for Rs, it's not such a great thing.

This is really the truth. It's true in red states where Rs race to be extreme on abortion instead of taking the 12-15 weeks that is completely sensible. You see it blue states/cities with implementation of one disastrous Prog policy after another.

And, of course, with one-party rule, corruption opportunities really ramp up.

I personally want them being sent back to their home country.

Some of us would like to see the U.S. remain the #1 overall seed on the geopolitical stage.

                        • Large cities are just always going to be more liberal than conservative, even when you have a Republican mayor like Giuliani, because big cities can't be managed on the same libertarian basis as you might run a one traffic light hamlet. New York City requires more centralized planning than Lagrange, Ohio. In rural America everyone is responsible for handling their own sewage. That would be a nightmare in a huge city -- the govt has to organize a system.

Among the 50 largest cities in America, 10 have Republican mayors. And most of those mayors, I can guess, would be the most radical leftist member of the House Republicans if they served in Congress.

                          • Handling their own sewage? What?

The reason cities are democratic isn’t some management issue that necessitates democrats. Republicans aren’t against a mayor, council, and government framework making rules and running a city.

Having a septic tank vs having a taxpayer funded sewer system. The latter is collectivist. The former is individualist. Everyone in a city having their own septic tank which they are responsible for having emptied now and again is obviously impossible.

If you choose to live in a big city you are probably already more "okay" with govt playing a larger role in society. For rural people local govt might mean a three person unpaid council that meets once or twice a month. Local govt is more omnipresent in big cities.

                              • I live in a Republican controlled town. We don’t have septic, everyone is on city sewer. Why democratic cities are democratic has almost nothing to do with basic city services. There is no Republican living in a brownstone in NYC thinking, “I need a septic tank!”

Larger cities are democratic largely because of the increased minority vote and universities. University students vote in urban areas at a 95% democratic clip. Lower income minorities believe democrats -at every level- are “on their side” and those cities absolutely cater to the lower socioeconomic strata by increasing social services provided.
