I don't think there is any question that the Wuhan lab was cleaving DNA strings in the Corona virus for the purpose of determining how dangerous mutations of this class of viruses might be. Labs in the west were carrying out similar studies. The research probably wasn't tied to any military bio-weapons research. It was scientists legitimately doing what they do. Research. The question of where did it originate has clearly been politicised and frankly is unimportant. What is important is to identify how the C19 virus managed to become as virulent in the human host as it did. At present that's not clear. Was an animal (sold as food in wet markets) infected from the Wuhan lab and was able to jump from animals to humans? Or was this purely transmission of an engineered virus to a Wuhan lab person(s) who then carried it elsewhere fron travel starting the pandemic.
My take is that the later is more likely than the former and if scientists are wanting to know how to stop this from happening in the future then bio-lab safety standards have to be improved. If a standard is compromised, plans have to be in place to minimize the dangers. I don't doubt that Chinese virologists are as committed to doing this as are scientist throughout the world. At the same time, the Chicoms don't want to be fingered as entirely to blame for the C19 pandemic - something that is occuring as anti-China sentiment increases. Get passed that and the world may be able to cooperate with a goal of coming up with "best practices" to prevent future pandemics as a result of lab leaks where legitimate virologic research is being conducted. That's been done before with Influenza and others. It's getting harder to do that when countries are ramping up their anti-whoever narrative. The US/China ideological battle for supremacy harms initiatives like that.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off.
