New York interparty feud ends with Gov Hochul pretty embarrassed, and her Supreme Court nominee defeated. After the state Senate judiciary committee REJECTED his nomination the minority Republicans took the highly unusual step of SUING to compel a full Senate vote. They did that today and in a 39-20 vote the guy was again defeated.
NY Dems were furious with her for nominating this guy.

I've been following a Russian news feed called Meduza. Well, it's actually a Russian antigovernment/antiwar group that now operates in the capital of Latvia, Riga. Meduza (you can google it if you're interested in following their news reports) formerly operated inside Russia but since Putin has decided he or his war in Ukraine can not be criticized, the group closed up shop in Russia and moved to Latvia.
There's several analysts that clearly have military backgrounds working on a feature that appeared about a month ago. It is an updated and interactive battle area map that focuses on areas where shooting between the two forces is on-going, That would be the line running NW to SE that connects Savatove, Kreminia, Soledar, Vuldehar, Bakhmut, Optyn or the front of roughly 80km in length at the western borders of the Luhansk and Donetsk Oblasts. The Russians have concentrated an estimated 90% of their active army, including the Wagner mercenary group, estimated to be close to 400k soldiers, at this front or in reserve in territory the Russians control behind the front and out of range of Ukrainian artillery. Below is a set of bullets that highlights the latest update (yesterday):- Meduza analysts are trying to make sense, or no sense as the case may be, of why the Russians have focused their ground combat operations almost exclusively on this small front. It appears to analysts that the Russian's tactical objective is to overwhelm the in theater Ukrainian forces and cut off Ukrainian LOCs to Bakhmut, surround them as they did with Mariupol, and force a retreat. Next step would be to occupy the gutted city. A strategic goal is hard to imagine but it could be that Russian commanders view Bakhmut and its commanding high ground as the doorway to achieving Putin's order of seizing the entirety of the Donetsk and Luhansk (the Donbas) Oblasts. ANalysts believe (and sources in the west agree) this is more of an aspirational goal rather than a realistic one.
- The cost of doing this in light of the view that capturing Bakhmut may not be the panacea Russian commanders are visualizing is extremely high. You've seen the losses piling up in the news of late. One estimate has the Russians losing the most soldiers in the last two weeks of any previous two week period - in the hundreds, approaching 1000. The Ukrainians are taking losses but not anywhere near to the extent the Russians are (estimated to be a 4 or 5:1 difference).
- The Ukrainian defense of Bakhmut suggests they are completely happy with attriting the Russian forces. The downside is that it is taking a lot of resources to defend Bakhmut that are being used up at the expense of a organizing and equipping a future counter-offensive that is expected in the near future.
- The general sense of the Meduza analysts is that Putin is preparing for "years long" military operations in Ukraine to ultimately achieve the fall of the westward oriented Zelenski government, installation of a pro-Russian government and leadership and, from a practical standpoint inclusion of Ukraine in the Russian Federation.
- Per Meduza, Putin has to be stopped with a significant military defeat of such scope and scale that he is forced to reevaluate his maximalist goals in Ukraine. They believe such a win is possible if the western powers continue the level of material support necessary to facilitate it given the current state of the Russian army after a year of fighting. That seems to be in question with little chance of it escalating to a nuclear exchange. The haggling over exactly what is to be given to the Ukrainians and what has been promised is actually delivered is a sore point. There's big questions about thel later. Putin knows this and thinks he can "suffer" longer than the west - Russia did it against Napoleon and against Hitler. Both with super-high casualty rates. He believes he can do it against NATO despite the incredibly hihg loss of life and property.
- Make no mistake. Putin has clearly, in the public and diplomatic space, made it clear to his enemies who oppose his aggression in Ukraine and to his supporters and citizens, that this war is about Russia's survival in the face of a NATO, led by the US, fixated on the destruction of mother Russia. It's a convincing lie and that lie needs to be fully exposed.
- This is a conventional war with all the aspects of that kind of past warfare with some new equipment and technologies being waged in an unprecedented information age allowing almost real time details of the combat such details available on social media platforms via cell phones and open source intelligence. It's an information campaign as important as the military campaign and one the west has to optimize and win.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
