There's a couple of geopolitical implications here (IMO). Xi hasn't been put off in his territorial designs by Putin's failures in Ukraine. In fact, Xi may have greenlighted an extended war in UKraine for Putin. ISW offered in it's analysis yesterday that the likely retaking of Kherson facilitated by an organized withdrawal of Russian forces, accompanied by the formulation of a program of propaganda to create this alternate reality for public consumption inside Russia I've spoken about, is an indicator that Putin is preparing Russians for an extended war to ultimately take Ukraine in its entirety. He's acknowledging it may take years, is preparing the Russian public for that and in the process of building towards a new offensive in the spring of 2023. Putin has issued a number of related new laws that are intended to fix bureaucratic inefficiencies that produced the current failures in Ukraine and the chaotic mobilization. Putin appears to not be concerned about the costs of achieving his imperialistic goals of empire for Russia. He's not worried about how long it takes. He's not looking for an off ramp or a negotiated peace settlement that might include a significant withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine.
Talk of a build-up of Russian troops in Belarus being concerning as it could represent a threat of a renewed Russian offensive from that country towards Kiev is being dismissed as unlikely. Maybe not. The dismissal of indicators of Russian offensives, target Ukraine, being planned preceded an actual invasion in February. I believe analysts at ISW think the Russians will regroup, reorganize and mount a new invasion of Ukraine next spring. Iran's recent involvement in Putin's war could signal an axis of like interests between Russia, Iran and China. That would be establishing the preeminence of a new world order with global outcomes being dictated by an axis of autocratic nationalists not by the alliance of democracies in the west led by the US.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished.
