      • If Stabenow's opponent is an Trumper endorsed by Trump and an election denier everybody should vote for Stabenow. If the opponent is someone willing to tell Trump to go away, they deserve a hearing.

I'll give Jon props on the Whitmer thing as well. But Stabenow is a useless tool. But yet, .. when she runs again in '24, she'll win by a landslide, because M voters vote for name familiarity more than they do for substance. Does the woman know how to push back on anything Democratic?
You can be sure that if your Trump approved candidate for Senate
beats Stabenow, he/she will stand behind Mitch and Trump. What you are complaining about is standard party politics. How do we know this? If anybody steps out of line like Liz Cheney or Pete Meijer they are cast out of the party. If they cultivated a maverick personality at odds with Donald Trump their graves on pissed on by the current Republican members. The Democratics certainly do not have a monopoly on party politics as you insist.

As far as what Stabenow does, she is the Chairman of the Ag committee and is the senator that fights the most for the great lakes.

                      • More on the military/political situation in Russia vis-a-vis Ukraine. I posted yesterday that Putin appeared to be by-passing MOD officers, namely, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shiogu, among other key general officers who would normally be in the COC, to deal directly with field commanders in Ukraine. Shoigu has been on again, off again influential with Putin both ideologically and militarily. Yesterday, he addressed a gathering of defense ministers from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) {Never heard of it until just yesterday}.

He announced that Russia has purposely slowed offensive operations in Ukraine to avoid civilian casualties - his statement coming on the heels of a Russian sea launched Kalibur missile attack that killed 22 civilians at a train station in eastern Ukraine yesterday. He went on to assert that Russia's strategic objectives are being obtained and have not changed. ISW is giving the Russians the benefit of the doubt saying that a purposeful slowdown in Russian advances in Ukraine could simply mean a shift in strategies to obtain the end result: the collapse of the Zelenski regime to be replaced by a Russian puppet government. OTH, it could be for multiple other reasons involving man-power, supply and equipment shortages preventing the continuation of combat operations at scale.

Since Russian forces resumed offensive operations following a pause on July 16 they have only managed to gain about 450.84 km2 (roughly 174 square miles) of new territory, an area around the size of Andorra. Russian forces have lost roughly 45,000 km2 of territory since March 21 (the estimated date of Russian forces’ deepest advance into Ukraine), an area larger than Denmark. As ISW has previously assessed, Russian forces are unable to translate limited tactical gains into wider operational successes.

As military operations on both sides wind down, not including constant artillery duels on the eastern and southern fronts, efforts by Russian political administrators working to establish control over occupied territory is running full-tilt. Among integrating banking, energy and school systems with Russian equivalents, "Filtration" is the forceable or coercive removal of Ukrainians, especially Ukrainian, children to Russia. For all intent and purpose, this isn't a whole lot different that what Hitler did with Jews who happen to find themselves in German occupied territory. That it hasn't gotten much attention or described as a horrific Putin directed policy of wiping out the Ukrainian culture and its people, is a surprise to me. You can find accusations and concern about what Putin is carrying out but not in the MSM.

On the economic side of things, there's been some good reads in the Economist the last few days. The bottom line is that in the short term, the Russian economy hasn't felt the full weight of sanctions except in certain economic sectors. One of them is aviation. Only about a third of Russian airlines are still operating. Restrictions to over-flight, landing rights and spare parts is behind the slow-down. There is a high cannibalizations rate of parts from grounded aircraft hulks. Things will get worse. Of the sanctions imposed so far, The Russian economy and banking system has escaped most intended burdens but that isn't going to last. Export controls of essential techy goods, in time, will ultimately be extremely damaging to the machinery that keeps the Russian economy at every level humming. The question is can the west continue to support Ukraine militarily and financially, especially Europe, as Putin purposely squeezes their energy supplies? A long cold winter in Europe, without lights and heat, is going to test western resolve.
