I can't speak for anyone else, but my criticism of Trump isn't virtue signaling. I don't criticize Trump for the same things that the Libs criticize him for. I have criticized him for letting his personal shortcoming bleed over into his ability to govern. He was a terrible chief executive who trusted lots of backstabbing clowns and ultimately he didn't do anything that he was really elected to do. There is without a doubt a portion of the Republican Party that is as you have described. A little over half I would guess. I wish that they would be more open to other candidates but the Republican establishment has such a shitty reputation with them that it's virtually impossible for them to accept somebody like DeSantis. I can't blame Republicans who only trust Trump. It's hard to trust the establishment that has shit on you for 20+ years.

Trump & DeSantis are populists. A lot of their supporters don't necessarily view the welfare state as the great enemy, they just think the wrong people control it and benefit from it. A not-insignificant portion of Trump's most loyal base are people who live in depressed ancestral Dem regions (Appalachia especially). Those people aren't universally against welfare or programs the Koch Brothers would call "socialist".

We'll never know what Koch Brothers conservatism looks like in action because the country has done nothing but further bloat the size of government and the welfare state since the beginning of the century. The only part of Koch Brothers "conservatism" that we dot was open borders.
