            • I'm not sure Putin or Xi give a flying fuck what our abortion laws are or if Puerto Rico is a state.

I know a lot of Republicans are very against spending any money to help Ukraine. I bet Putin probably does get a smile out of that.

I agree that Putin and Xi care very little about actual USA issues.

What they love is the rapid assimilation to a one party rule system. Right out of Mao, Lenin and Marx's playbook.

                  • Video of the much hyped Snake Island after the Russians fled. It’s basically a waste of lives and resources for either side to try and hold it at this point. Indefensible from both the sea and the mainland.

The current political circumstances in the US and from my perspective is that support here is solid. But Americans get a biased picture of global support for Ukraine. It's probably 55/45 for and that may be a stretch.

The Chinese and the Russians have made their case in various forums including the UN, the G20 and versions of the World Economic Forum to include APEC and ASEAN. Their case is the "current world rules based order" - the term applied to the result of Pax Americana and military alliances forged after WWII to include NATO are decidedly western leaning and favor continuation of the west's, particularly the US's, geopolitical power. It is the status quo. The Chinese question that and the Russians have more-or-less gotten on that bandwagon. Both seek change. China, before the pandemic, was making economic and financial inroads to disrupt the global rules based order in those spheres. China has challenged the US in defense and sea power. Russia has severely disrupted the rules based order by invading Ukraine. The EU along with the US have recognized the threat Putin's expansionist strategic objectives present to the status quo and have reacted accordingly.

But that's it. The rest of the world is suspect of the west's motives and generally does not see the rules based order that has persisted for the last 70+ years benefitting them. They want a say in geopolitical outcomes and particularly in how the global economy meets their needs and serves they're strategic objectives. For 75+ years, during the period of Pax Americana, it's been the US that has dominated the influencing of geopolitical and economic outcomes. The EU, militarily aligned with the US via NATO has been a willing participant in advancing their own, along with the US's strategic objectives.

Accordingly, support for Ukraine from this 45% is tepid and fragile at best and both the Chinese and the Russian diplomacy over the last 5 months has tried to leverage this to not gain support so much as inhibit condemnation and the impact of western imposed sanctions on Russia. To that end, the Russians have been particularly successful. That lack of support for Ukraine is going to spread as citizens become more concerned with inflation and the cost of energy, food and the availability of both. The question for me is can Ukraine, with western support predictably diminishing over time, with global support already under pressure, outlast Putin. There's really no answers right now to that question.

Amid continued reports that within the battle space of Ukraine both sides are exhausted physically, mentally and in terms of military personnel and war stocks, one would think something is going to give. I make no predictions and have abandoned my obsessive following of minute details of the on-going ground battle. It looks to me that for now, a stalemate has been reached between the opposing military forces.

Analysts are giving the Russians a slight edge in their ability to persevere both through force of arms and economically. There is no telling when or how hostilities might end and under what conditions. The human suffering in Ukraine will continue and worsen. That we have Russian leadership that does not care about human costs, I see little hope that the human suffering will end let alone be reduced by pressure being brought by those that seek peace and the reduction of human suffering globally. So far that has fallen on deaf ears. There will be enormous pressure on the Zelenski government to seek agreements with Putin. That has it's own set of downside risks for sure, not the least of which is letting Putin realize his expansionist objectives that include restoration of a Russian Empire, starting with Ukraine.
