Oh, they have the “right” imo. It just pisses me off.

Also, lol at the Crystal Palace paragraph.

It's not just conservatives that needed to step up. It's anybody with a shred of common sense, i.e. the "Moderates" that have been sitting back for years. The last 2 years worth of Pandhysteria and the associated insanity, along with utter ineptitude in Washington have finally gotten them to move.

            • The NYTs morning news feed posted the anger expressed by 10 essayists who wrote to them complaining that the west was sitting on it's hands while Russia obliterated Ukrainian cities and brutally terrorized and killed its residence of Ukraine. Obviously, they resonated with me. No matter ......

I'm about as sure as one could be that the major players, particularly the US, are involved with back-channel diplomatic and military discussions with their Russian counterparts on the Russian invasion. Is that reassuring? On the question, will this be the spark for WWIII and a nuclear exchange between the US (and it's Ukrainian proxy) and Russia ..... yes. Notwithstanding Putin ordering another nuclear threat by testing its new ICBM, this demonstration is "pablum" for the masses - particularly in Russia.

On the question, will the Russians succeed in obtaining their newly stated military objectives of seizing the entire Donbas region? Probably ...... but, it will be costly short term. Moreover, Russia is setting themselves up for a grinding, long term battle with determined Ukrainian resistance to occupation of a relatively small but economically important part of Ukraine. Aside from punishing sanctions that are not likely to be removed anytime soon, the thing is that the resistance will be on the ground, in an otherwise free Ukraine. The tools that Putin uses to suppress dissent will be subject to press scrutiny and exposure.

A loosing undertaking for Putin? For sure, and despite the horrors of Putin's genocide in Ukraine (which he will pay dearly for), he's stepped in it. I'm reminded of an essay written by a historian who tracks the rise and fall of the world's empires. Their falls are characterized by egocentric driven wars by rulers that end up in weakening the empires they rule not strengthening them. If that's some solace, it requires patience, something I don't have a lot of.

                  • ......... the downside of Putin's missteps and lies is that, being it is clear that Putin is not tolerating or listening to advisors who might offer criticism, as the combination of western weapons and Ukrainian forces skills keeps Putin from claiming victory and instead facing humiliating defeat, he'll use chemical weapons to reverse that outcome. Don't be surprised if he orders the use of these when things start going south for him in the coming weeks.

I wonder if, as we head into 2023, we're going to see a schism in the rightwing media outlets. Which, if any, will stick with Trump and try to turn DeSantis into a Heel?

                      • 5 Supreme Court decisions today. 3 boring, two sort of interesting.

The first was an 8-1 decision denying Puerto Ricans the ability to collect SSI. Sotomayor only dissenter. Gorsuch and Thomas wrote interesting concurrences that had little to do with the actual facts of this specific case but talked about equal protection under the law and the status of US territories much more broadly.

The second was somewhat of a first amendment case involving the regulation of billboards in Austin, Texas. 6-3 decision in which the Court effectively said cities can regulate billboards more strictly than on-premises signs.

Perrette and incoming CNN CEO Chris Licht notified staffers of the decision in a meeting on Thursday afternoon. Licht bluntly told employees it was a "uniquely shitty situation."

LOL! "A Uniquely Shitty Situation" should be CNN's tagline.
