The Pentagon and the Mayor of the small city that is near Chernobyl confirms that story. Given the Kremlin's past record of honesty, it's hard to say what this means. CTR is reporting statements by both parties in negotiations that took place in Turkey on Tuesday demonstrate that Kiev, after claims by the Kremlin that Zelenski hadn't drafted any proposals, has provided very specific proposals. The negotiating team spokesman said those proposals would be forwarded to president Putin.

Zelenski, in short, will negotiate territory only after a cease fire and Russian forces have returned to where they came from. He's already offered neutrality and won't join NATO. However, that offer is contingent on "iron clad" security guarantees. A combination of countries including the US, Turkey and Russia would guarantee to defend the territorial integrity of Ukraine from aggression. None of the countries in this arrangement have commented on the proposal. It is highly unlikely they'd agree to them.

Other reports from the Economist suggest Putin is being mislead regarding the status of Russian forces on the ground in Ukraine and the economic fall-out from sanctions. They are too afraid to tell Putin things aren't going well. His almost complete isolation during the COVID pandemic exacerbates his situational awareness. The net result is that since Putin probably does not know of the losses his forces have sustained and the level of effective resistance to the presence of Russian forces on Ukrainian soil, he's not likely to be receptive of proposals for cease fires or negotiating with Zaleski.

      • Apparently, the Russians have declared a cease fire in Mariupol. Probably just one day to get aid in and residents out. I still think the city is declared under Ukrainian control. Maybe not as the Russian commander in charge of the war crimes being committed there said yesterday that the fighting would stop if the Ukrainians laid down their arms.

My position is fuck them and fuck Vladimir Putin. I hope everyone of you has seen the photographs and overhead shots of the complete destruction of Mariupol - flattened. How does the modern world stand by, on the sidelines and let this happen? Disgraceful collective cowardice in the face of barbaric Russian actions in Ukraine.

IMO, the sanctions on Russia should remain no matter the pain in the west; no matter an end to combat on Ukrainian soil or agreements reached. Lifting them, allowing Putin to return to respectability and be seated at any global table would be a despicable outcome. Putin can burn in hell.

        • Ukraine is almost on the guest list of countries worth protecting which has to be absolutely soul crushing for them. They're the nation-state version of the NCAA tourney's "first four out".

Don't be shocked at all when after the dust settles, Putin returns to polite society. Russia should be ostracized like Iran and North Korea for a generation but they won't be.

          • The logic of keeping Putin and his Russia out of the league of civilized countries is unassailable. The scope of the destruction he has wrought in Ukraine is unprecedented - not in history because the allies flattened Berlin and wiped out two Japanese cities in pursuit of victory in WWII - but in terms of the peace and economic development that has prevailed since the end of hostilities in WWII brought about by nuclear weapons.

While Russia has the 11th largest economy in terms of GDP, they are predominantly a petro-state. Any country with balls can free themselves, of course over time but it can be done, of gas and oil from Russia. Let them collapse and in that process the west needs to be prepared for typical nuclear threats and to respond in kind.

            • Putin was abso-fuckin-lutely testing the water to bring all the former Soviet republics and puppet states back under the wing of the Motherland. Didn’t he call them “lost sheep” or something close? Crimea was the toe in the water. Ukraine was wading out. He cut his foot on a pop-top with this, though. He is a bad actor for the world. So is Xi Jinping in the South China Sea who is actively extending tendrils through Asia.

You can't report on that kind of stuff when your goal is to "fortify" the election for Biden.

                  • There's a reason why the Soviet Republic broke up. Colonialism is a losing proposition even it is successful in conquering these lands. A lot of these former republics are much richer than they were under Russia's thumb. There was a report I read that said the intelligence services are intercepting calls back home and soldiers are telling their family how much richer Ukraine is with street lights and paved roads. Good luck trying to invade Poland.

I don't think shutting down these countries for a generation is the answer, it hurts the citizens even more. But I have no idea what the answer is.

Why are you Trumpers relying on the Post and the Times? Fox News is the biggest money making news operation in the world. Clearly they can beef up their investigative wing, but they would actually have to report on the wrongdoings of both and we all know that wouldn't happen.

The MSM is almost certainly at work right now formulating a plan to gloss this all over for Bidet and make sure it doesn't affect his re-election bid. The Dems control the WH, the House, the Senate, the Justice Department, and the media. Hunter is completely safe from prosecution.

                          • It would seem fairly obvious that most Soviet republics are better off from, you know, an obvious communist, centralized goverment control state. Almost anything would have been better than the socialism they were forced to live under. There's a lesson there, I reckon, if people are willing to learn and heed it.

                            • The most recent Harvard-Harris poll had DJT beating Biden by 6 head-to-head and, heh, Cackles by 11. It's almost impossible to overstate how fucking bad the clownshow is when you're losing, outside the MoE, to DJT.

The MSM is Fox News, you fellas can't come in here and trumpet the huge ratings they get compared to CNN and then not include them as a mainstream news organization. You can be certain that Fox News will continue peddling the nonsense that Biden stole the election.
