Mitch actually gave Schumer an expedited reconciliation option for the debt ceiling raise, but Schumer passed on it because, well, he probably doesn't have the 50 votes. And he doesn't want to own it. Because, well, he knows what that means -- the minority party will use it against the majority party in the upcomings. He knows because he fucking did it.

I saw an article explaining some arcane reconciliation rules and now I can't find it. I don't know if it's accurate but it was saying that while you can do multiple reconciliation bills a year, you can only do it ONCE by sending it directly to the floor for a vote (what Dems want to do). Additional bills have to emerge through the Budget Committee and Republicans control half the Committee. If every Republican on the Committee simply doesn't attend the meeting, they fail to have a quorum and no business can occur.

So this is partly why Mitch wanted to tie debt ceiling to the bigger spend-o-rama. Debt ceiling had a very urgent deadline and the Dems were losing their shit over not having a reconciliation package ready by that deadline.

That may not be accurate about the Committee stuff but it's an interesting look at the strategy being employed. But I don't know what really made Mitch change his mind. Manchin really may have said something to him about a filibuster carve-out.

BTW, apparently there are already around 160 carve-outs for the filibuster. There's an entire book about them, which must be riveting reading.

My understanding is the same, basically that no more than one reconciliation bill can be sent directly to the floor and avoid the filibuster in each year. Do you remember what "a year" means. Is it the fiscal year ( Sept 30-Sept 30) or is it a calendar year? I can't see where any of this benefits the Rs. The US is taking in record amounts of taxes, and payments on the debt are in no way endangered without a debt ceiling increase. All either party needs to do is pass a law that says that debt is a priority and is to be paid first out of taxes received. Of course, this would mean that spending on other matters would have to stop.

We are going to face this anyway in the future. A 2% rise in interest rates (to the normal secular rate) means $ 560 Billion extra each year in payments. That means a lot of new taxes just to service the debt.

Not certain but I believe this post post is in response to the news I provided this morning (I'm posting in the +6h from ET region) on the IATA's development of a standard app that contains necessary travel documents for entry into any given county.

First, I generally agree with you that the US shouldn't be like Western European democracies. They are far from countries that fully embrace the classic liberalism that I do. Nonetheless, their governments promote market based economic and fiscal policies in varying degrees with the added approach that favors social liberal policies. European countries tax accordingly

TBH, the Biden's $3.5, Build America Back Better legislative agenda in it's proposed form would bring the US close to the combination of free market economic and fiscal policies combined with social liberal polices that characterize several European governments. Biden's social liberal legislative agenda is more like these social liberal governments of Europe than any administration from the early 1900's to present have asked the US congress to pass. FDR's and Johnson's policies were close but not that close. Biden's is an overtly "Green" (with the attendant regulatory policies), massive give free shit away policy. The tax increases planned to support that level of spending will end up crippling economic growth in the US for a long time.

My point is that some of Biden's legislative agenda is going to pass because Americans, in general, like free shit. Their wokeism embraces the false promises of the Greens. By passing it, and it is very likely to pass in some form, no one now living in America will have to "pack (their) shit" to experience what it's like to live in Europe. They'll instead be living like Europeans with many of the culturally acceptable diktats common within European nations right here in America. It's happening.

Re IATA apps. I think you may be attempting to describe the IATA's development of a standard app that conveniently holds necessary travel documents for entry into any given county, a program that reflects the worst aspects of authoritarian or socialist governments in European nations.

IMO, the IATA's app doesn't have a lot to do with how European governments conduct themselves. I also don't think it's a vehicle to leverage people to get vaccinated or a restriction of my liberties. I suspect you do.

What I see it as is an app that simplifies accessing document requirements for boarder entry and crossing by digitizing and storing them.

I can see why opponents of mandated vaccinations might see this kind of thing as a means of forcing travelers to be vaccinated to travel on aircraft flying internationally. I don't oppose the requirement to have a valid pass port to travel internationally. I don't oppose IATA regulations that don't allow me to carry certain things aboard an aircraft - these regs are for the safety of passengers and crew. I don't see the TSA or other country's similar authorities that conduct inspections of my person and my luggage before boarding an aircraft to be an invasion of my privacy. Likewise, given the facts available about the current pandemic and how SARS2 is transmitted and the attendant health risks, I also don't oppose the requirement to board an aircraft without being vaccinated against SARS2. I see those regs at about the same level of restrictions to my liberties and privacy as I see inspections of my person and my luggage and restrictions to carrying certain items aboard an aircraft. YMMV.
