      • On the Milley stuff, Fox's Pentagon reporter has been throwing a bit of cold water on it. She's reporting that Milley's calls with China were via teleconference and at least 15 other people were on the line, including people from Mike Pompeo's State Dept. And he had basically the same conversation with a dozen or more NATO members during those weeks. So Woodward's book may be sensationalizing things a bit.

            • A Coup of Pelosi’s Own

The House Speaker publicizes her nuclear option to protect the world from Trump.

              Jan. 8th 2021

              From the NYTimes

“In a phone call to the chairman, Gen. Mark A. Milley, Ms. Pelosi appeared to be seeking to have the Pentagon leadership essentially remove Mr. Trump from his authorities as the commander in chief. That could be accomplished by ignoring the president’s orders or slowing them by questioning whether they were issued legally.”

“But General Milley appears to have made no commitments. Short of the cabinet invoking the 25th Amendment or removing Mr. Trump through impeachment in the House and conviction in the Senate, it is unconstitutional to defy legal orders from the commander in chief.”

According to the report, defense officials “resented being asked to act outside of the legal authority of the 25th Amendment and saw it as more evidence of a broken political system.”

These defense officials said “they cannot remove the president from the chain of command. That would amount to a military coup.”

              • Here's a little additional info re: Milley. According to this, last October SecDef Mark Esper became aware of intelligence that the Chinese had begun to genuinely believe that the US was preparing a sneak attack against them. Esper is the one who got the ball rolling on trying to assure the Chinese that no missiles were about to fly. Take it FWIW

                • So, we're going to shit all over Milley when there were legitimate concerns about Trump's mental state post Biden's presidential election win? Someone is going to tell me that Trump's behavior following his election loss reflected a rational man?

Look, the process of limiting a President's ability to unlock the nuclear football is not only highly classified but permissions involve other people. So, that's off the table as something he might have done.

OTH, his ability to, on his orders, launch other military action, was clearly a risk. If he did that, it would have been a lawful order, IMO.

It appears to me, people in a position to do so, were attempting to keep him from issuing such an order. Milley was backstopping a failure to do that by letting the Chinese (others?) know that's not happening. Bernstein sensationalized that.

Military officers attest when they accept a commission to ....."support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.....' not the president per se.

IMO. if Trump had issued military action that Milley deemed unconstitutional, he would have been within his authority to not carry it out. That's not a Coup. It's Milley acting in accordance with his oath.

Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

It's one thing to refuse to do something that is Unconstitutional. We can get into a whole debate about the merits of that given that there's a pretty strong argument that every conflict we've been inolved with since WWII has been unconstiutionally declared and thus any act in the futherance thereof is unconstitutional and then what that means to a soldier who decides he doesn't want to fight an unconstitutional war. [Hint...count marshalled]

But, let's just say it's one thing to refuse to do something. It's another thing to affirmatively act. So modify your statement -- "...he would have been within his authority to not carry it out and then to actively work with a foreign power to undermine the order."

Now, I think this mostly much to do about nothing -- but, then again, I though the garbage shit about PDJT officials speaking to foreign countries during the transition was hot garbage, too.

                        • There is only one person that can issue a launch order (the Prez) but it takes several others to carry out the order.

According to Bernstein, Milley assembled the relevant top brass and got a verbal acknowledgement that each would follow "the process" and not deviate from the established procedure in any way shape or form. There obviously is a lawful order check and balance in that process.

By all accounts, civilian, Cabinet or military, Trump was not a "very stable genius" in the last two weeks of office. Milley reached out to China and said to his Chinese counterpart don't even think about fucking with us in this time of flux - democracy can be messy, but the US is strong. We will do nothing with China (as you fear) but don't try and take advantage of the current situation.

Trump most likely would not (and did not) have gone rogue, but his actions and words obviously deeply concerned the highest levels of gov't. You have a President raging about a "stolen election", "massive voter fraud" and a "deep state" that EVERYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET knows not to be true. And that person has his finger on the proverbial button. If you were the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that wouldn't concern you?

Add another 12% if you want to count living beneath the poverty line but not receiving full welfare (only food stamps).

                              • (Milley) “has no statutory authority over operational forces of any kind. That means that he is not in a position to order anyone in the armed forces to say or do anything. Can’t do it. He is preeminently the senior military advisor to the president. That’s what he is. So in theory, before he would make such a phone call [to the Chinese counterpart], he would discuss the subject of the phone call with the president, the Commander in Chief. He certainly would not do something without coordinating with the National Security Advisor and the Secretary of State because this is beyond defense, this is foreign policy statement he is making.”
