Remember when "experts" told us that Russian hackers managed to plant pictures of Hunter Biden smoking crack on his laptop while it was turned off and disconnected from the internet? They are so brilliant that they even managed to plant incriminating evidence of him being a creepy sexual predator and being on the take from China for access to his dad (10% goes to the big man, BTW).

I recently had an email exchange of ideas with 4 MDs from California - the usual group with whom I have these discussions. The initial email from a pediatrician asked is it really an unacceptable risk for spreading the virus in household gatherings over the Holidays and what is the evidence?

I responded by posting the GaTech risk assessment tool and showed that in the county of N. CA where these MD's practice, for a gathering of 10 people and based on disease prevalence in that county there was about a 10% risk that one person in that gathering would have COVID. I then went on to say that the risk of such gatherings can be reduced to near zero by layered mitigation measures involving all participants.

Another MD cited a study that looked at what is called Secondary Attack Risk (SAR) which is an epidemiological term that describes the risk of viral spread in congregate settings - mostly for dormitories and large communal living circumstances. The study concluded that the SAR of SARS-CoV-2 was 16% higher than for SARS or MERS. That's a lot. But, oh, BTW, the SAR was 7% for SARS/MERS and around 8% for SARS-COV-2 ...... essentially meaninglessly greater and pretty low to start with.

A third MD who works in an ICU that is at 80% capacity responded that one can find any number of statistics that will support whatever political or moral position you wish to have supported by them. However, none of that addresses the suffering he sees of both patients who die alone and care staff that attend to them. That hit home for me .... putting the terrible human toll that the pandemic has wrought.

It still pisses me off that we are bombarded by COVID bad news a lot of it misleading and without context and therefore not worth talking about. But I've become much more introspective about the pandemic and less concerned about making a point that the implications of COVID-19 are less than they are being made out to be and, perhaps more importantly, officials continue to over-react, implementing various mitigation measures that have little impact on improving the PH and at great costs. When you remove hard data, the human cost, which is mostly immeasurable, is high ...... I can live with the COVID bad news if it's intent is largely to change behaviors such that spread is lessened.

He's obviously not going to succeed but he unquestionably has a group of influential lunatics whispering in his ear to try. They make no secret of where they stand on social media. If someone like Jonathan Swan says (yes through "unnamed sources") that these people have his ear a LOT right now, I am inclined to listen. And he says these aren't the usual "never trumper" sources telling him this; it's people that have been Trump loyalists up to now (someone like a Mark Meadows in other words).
