In Florida, schools need local Health Departments to say it is not safe enough to open in person schools. Fine. Then DeSantis and Co. order local health departments to not take a stand and only provide facts on safely reopening schools.

Arizona and Florida are getting better. Less clear about Texas where they had a single-day high number of deaths announced (324) excluding that weird data dump day. The positivity rate also hit a new high of 24.5%. It's hard to know if that's because testing is way down or what.

Not surprising at all. A similar thing just happened in FL. % positive numbers went up in every county in the tri-county S. FL region while case numbers only rose slightly on Tuesday. As soon as the data hit FL's PH Dashboard around 11am, the news reported the typical dire consequences headlines because for a straight week, both new case and % positive numbers had been declining. By about 2pm, the increased % positive #s were attributed to one lab submitting 4000 positive test results on the day before going back to June 23rd. That was nearly 30 % of the total 15K results reported for that day and around half of the positives.Originally posted by lineygoblue View Post
I had been tracking other metrics over the last two weeks. All of them had significant downward trends - ED visits, hospitalizations, bed and ICU space use. On Monday of this week, the first positive news article reporting these trends as reported by the three tri-county hospital systems themselves appeared on the front page of the Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald. Things are going well in FL and it is becasue behaviors are changing. I just shrugged at the increases that were reported yesterday knowing full well the data being reported by the press and conclusions being drawn from it are unreliable for all the reasons that have been posted here.
I've said this before. The lack of uniform test processing by labs and test result reporting by states and even by counties is making it impossible for the public to judge the efficacy of the need for a stronger or more relaxed response to the pandemic. I do think that FL officials, having learned the lessons of faulty test reporting and how that affects pandemic response decisions, do have more data available to them to put a more complete COVID picture in context. Desantis, who has been a reopening advocate, appropriate basic mitigation measures left up to the counties, has been a force. I don't know for sure, I can only judge from what these officials are quoted as saying wrt the local measures they are easing or tightening. There seems to be some momentum for moving to Phase II in S FL which is currently still in Phase I after stepping to Phase II and then retreating, and to Phase III in the rest of the state after retreating from that Phase in early June.
The hot topic right now, as it is in most states, is in-person learning as the school year begins. Desantis has mandated in-person learning be offered as an option, that decision left to county school boards. He's also been soft on school starting dates leaving that to county school boards as well. In Broward Co. the board said that classes will begin next week but there will only be virtual class rooms through September. That prompted outcries from parents and applause from some, not all, teachers. The school board relented and said they'll reassess every two weeks with an eye toward going to in person learning when it is safe to do so ..... criteria for that not detailed. So, the public can't know when it is "safe" or not and that is because school officials are leaving themselves wiggle room to justify continued virtual learning so as to avoid the predictable dire warnings from the media when the first school age child tests positive for the virus, actual risk of disease burden in that age cohort notwithstanding.
In GA, last week, it was reported that a 7yo died from COVID after starting school. On Monday, it was revealed that the child had a high fever, he was place in a tub of cold water (a standard and usually safe practice to reduce a fever) and the child drowned. He did not die from COVID. You've all seen the video of kids, unmasked, crowded together in the halls of GA HS that was open for the first day. This video accompanied an article that stated on the first day of school, 53 students and staff tested Positive for COVID. 300 quarantined. It wasn't reported that every one of these positive tests would have resulted from an exposure days before the first day in school. The school day crowd didn't cause the positives. Some contact in the 5-10d period before school started caused the positive tests.
This is where we are. You must be very skeptical of the reporting of the public data as well as the press's interpretation of it.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished.
