Oh, and Boston is about to remove an Abraham Lincoln statue. It shows Lincoln with a kneeling slave that he is about to free. Protestors don’t like it because the statue doesn’t show the slave as an equal with Lincoln, but rather the slave is depicted as submissive.

Uhhhh, no "breakthrough" per UK study. I'd say steroids like dexamethasone among others became a mainstay in the treatment of critically ill COVID-19 patients sometime in early February. Standard of Care a week or so later. Still, it is nice to see good news amongst mostly bad case #s news today.
COVID-19 has a strong predilection to inflammation in multiple organ systems. At first, Docs thought SARS-COV-2 was attacking just the lungs and producing pneumonia followed by respiratory failure and death. Well, it was but as time went on, it became clear that the virus was causing systemic inflammation affecting multiple organ systems. Not long after came evidence that it wasn't pneumonia as the cause of death it was pulmonary emboli, followed by COVID-19 presenting primarily as inflammatory vascular disease. That's why any number of steroids confer huge benefits in recovery.
Don't mean to belittle the study because it was well done and has been peer reviewed lending study weight to the use of Dexa in a cleanly defined cohort - critically ill patients on O2 therapy or ventilators. It's primary benefit is to reduce the mortality rates for COVID-19.

There's no sugar coating the increased case numbers being seen in states like AZ, CA and FL and being associated with reopenings. Sure, I've said those should be expected but in several states the GR and splines you attach to the graphs are upward pointing. That's bad. I think the allegation that AZ is going to hit a hospital bed space ceiling is over-played. The facts remain that there's some room for more admissions, but ED docs are getting concerned that the surge in new COVID cases requiring hospitalization are going to collide with the increase in bed space needed for the increased number of post-op elective procedures being done and the normal flow of heart attacks and strokes.
Palm Beach County - among the three S. FL counties that have the most total cases state wide - has had a nearly 10% positive rate, up from 2-4%, after re-opening on May 18th. County officials had been pressing the governor's office for approval of a plan with a quick transition from Phase I then II and quickly to III. Officials were basing this on constant call from residents to OPEN! Reports told of residents not wearing masks and crowding beach bars and restaurants. After today's state numbers reached the highest single day total since the virus first hit the state, PB Co. officials are talking mandatory face masks and stepping back to some restrictions. It's a warning to residents - pay fucking attention.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. Have you noted that while we're seeing cases per capital hold relatively steady, we're seeing deaths per capita drop by about 50%? The obvious implication is that younger, less vulnerable persons are most like to take advantage of the reopening, are the ones getting it NOW and we're seeing a drop in deaths. I think in Florida there's been a consistent drop in "Over 50" cases" while "Under 50" cases are rising.
This is especially of significance because the "vulernable" population is what was decimated in the early wave -- in NYC, in Ohio, in Italy -- probably everywhere. The elderly -- who are more likely to have the underlying conditions that will fucking kill you -- were blitzed. We're now in a stage where the "vulnerable" are taking a ton of precautions and the less vulnerable (starkly less vulnerable) are back in society.
I think one would predict that we would see more cases with re-openings, but that we'd also see more cases in younger cohorts (as the "vulernable" are still shuttered) and that, as a result, deaths would decrease.
