        • If you can't get the schollies, don't have rich parents, and don't have the work ethic to bust your ass making yourself better, then there's always the military. Matures oneself in a hurry, builds character and collaborative perspective, pays your debt for living in the greatest nation on earth, and provides an avenue for a college education without terminal bankruptcy.

            • This is a somewhat shocking poll that mainly makes me sad.

Using religion as a justification to discriminate against certain groups is growing in support.

Put aside the LGBQT stuff for the time being. 24% you should be allowed to refuse service to atheists because you don't like their religious beliefs. And that's grown by almost 10% in 5 years. 19% say you should be allowed to refuse service to Jews if you can think of a religious reason for it.

Small but growing number of Americans favor allowing religiously based service refusals to Atheists, Muslims, Jews, and African Americans.

              • And here's the breakdown by party affiliation. I mean, I think it's sad that as many as 19% of Democrats say it's okay to deny service to gays, but 47% of Republicans said the same thing. And nearly a quarter of Republicans don't have a problem with refusing service to Jews.

                • One last one...47% of Republican say they are somewhat bothered or bothered "a lot" when they hear a language other than English spoken in public

And yes, the older you are and the less educated you are, the more this is likely to bother you.

                  • For-profit college debt owed by students who have zero business attending college is a big problem and mYbe even plurality of student debt.

Like healthcare, if this becomes a freebie then governmental intrusion goes thru the roof.

Right. And the job market that used to absorb kids not meant for college no longer exists. It's learn a trade (access to which is tightly controlled) or get a white collar job. And almost any halfway decent white collar job requires a college degree, even if they aren't at all necessary. So they're under a lot of pressure to either be satisfied with a job in retail or food service for the rest of their lives or gamble that a Business degree from the University of Phoenix is worth the price.

                      • The trade schools that teach welding and such are begging for students. Yeah, you have to do grunt and then journeyman work for a while, but there is need and opportunity.

                        • Some of that is a consequence of never seeing real full employment. We're just now getting to maybe a true full employment and suddenly the employers are not as picky with requirements. There was some study that came out that tracked job openings and requirements that shows the decline in requirements.

People and politicians focus on the micro-economic of college costs and loans, but they don't make the better argument that it's a numbers game. If you are competing with other countries, you better continue to have a rising educational base among the masses.

The trades are always going to be needed but this isn't a mutually exclusive proposition.

College tuition has far outpaced inflation, there are different factors but for public schools the main factor is the schools do not get the same amount of funding as it used to. Mass debt forgiveness is not going to happen but the folks telling the youngsters to pull up the bootstraps maybe don't remember how much they had to pay in comparison to what you have to pay now.

But as an election issue promise the moon, we have the definitive jackass in office who promised everything and Mars and it worked. The dude said he could erase the national debt in 8 years and he actually increased deficit spending and that is glossed over by these alleged fiscal Hawks. Imagine Trump trying to argue moral hazard in a debate on college debt forgiveness? Let's see him bring it.

I imagine you're probably right, but the skilled trades can't absorb the entire group we're talking about. Nor would they want to. Scarcity is what allows them to live well.
