  • You take out a loan. You agree to pay it back. If you can't pay it back, you don't take it out. What is difficult about that concept?

Exactly right. Plus, the whole student loan "crisis" is detached from facts. The vast majority of students have no problem paying back their loans. The median borrower spends abut 4% of monthly income on student loan payments. Crisis!

To the extent kids are in trouble, it's ALMOST exactly as Jon says -- but the problem is also the government's. The entire student loan program is assbackwards. But, at it's most fundamental level, the lender doesn't care who the borrower is. They don't care about how much they lend and they don't care about how likely that money is to be repaid. They just wanna hand it out. Who can blame a dumbass 18-year old from taking it? Well, I can -- but, there are two parties at fault.

But, again, most kids are doing fine repaying loans. Warren's proposal would, as is always the case for massive governmental intervention, reward the idiots for bad choices and punish the smart choices. Government takeovers are always least common denominator driven.

Warren's utter bullshit is enough that I won't vote for her against anyone.

This is in reference to the NBC/WSJ poll. Another 24% wanted to continue investigating him first.

Believe the question was slightly different in the Fox poll that recently came out that showed 43% wanted Trump impeached and removed and another 7% wanted him impeached but not removed.

So so much good news for Trump in that Fox poll!!

          • talent, you seem to have some great facts supporting the position that there really isn't a student loan crisis as depicted by the left who, in this case, the spokespersons are Bernie and Pocahontas. You or anyone have a fact based assessment of the potential illusion that there is also a faux crisis involving a diminution of the middle class, obscene amounts of wealth held by the 1%, etc, etc, etc.?

            • Well, with one cursory Google search, I found this from FactCheck.org.

You can game the language. The manner in which wealth is defined or measured makes a difference.

              or

"According to our calculations, the bottom 40 percent combined have a negative net worth, a figure that becomes positive in the 41 percentile. Only 12 percent have negative net wealth, but the large negative wealth of the bottom percentiles skews the bottom figures downward."

There is a wealth gap in the US but it is inflated by the enormous wealth the wealthiest have in comparison to the reasonable wealth (as compared to that of the rest of the world) 50% of Americans have.

The article states there is no question there are some ultra-wealthy people out there but to use Jon's logic and applying it to earning and saving: If the bottom 40% of Americans, or more particularly, the bottom 12% made bad choices and have a negative net worth, while the top 50% seem to be doing OK having made reasonably good choices along the way, why does the government have to come in and bail out the stupid people?

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says that "the 20 richest people in our country own more wealth than the bottom half of the American population -- 150 million people." We explain that statistic.

I mean, it depends. Is the question purely relative? The biggest pushback in that regard is that you need to account for government transfers as part of income for poorer folks.

If the question is absolute then it's an easy pushback. The US continues to grow. Are you better off today than in 1980? Well, yes, for every class. By a longshot. The top 1% are way better off (relative), but everyone is better off.

Finally, there is the fundamental question of whether "income inequality" is bad.

                  • 22% of student loans are in default
but as talent says banks don't give a shit they'll get that money somewhere
screening process for financial aid needs to be much stricter--I understand lots of kids cant afford college but when you have 22% defaulting theres an issue
those kids default many time through a lack of responsilbity for their decisions. yes I lknow there are exceptions but too many kids take as much as they can get without a care in the world then make no attempt to minimize their debt load

not everyone but more then enough

                    • In other encouraging news .........

Another one bites the dust. A crazy, all camoed up and wielding what looks like an AR-15 and a ton of clips around his waist, approaches the front door of the Federal Building in downtown Dallas and starts shooting rounds through the glass doors. Reportedly armed Federal Agents inside the door and in the lobby got everyone to the ground and returned fire inflicting a fatal wound to the shooter. The video shows the shooter taking a hit and trying to remove himself from the scene where it looks like he is hit again while fleeing. He subsequently collapses between cars in a parking lot and dies.

As morbid as this might seem, it's a great video (there's several un-edited or not blurred out videos out there on the web) to watch this dude taking rounds from Federal Agents who do a great job protecting lives but can also handle their side arms. One photo I saw shows a Fed with a nice looking 45 in his hand. Hopefully he hit the bastard.

The point here is that when potential targets of armed crazies like schools, large gatherings and Federal facilities, are appropriately protected by armed personnel who are both trained and equipped to confront a shooter, bad shit doesn't result and the crazy can be neutralized. IOW, we don't need massive government gun control programs, we need personnel armed and trained in potential targets to reduce the essentially one-off risks of bad shit happening.

Authorities identified the gunman as a 22-year-old Army veteran. Police have not released a motive for the shooting in which no one else was injured.

                      • 22% of student loans are in default
There were also 22% in default in 1990. Now, it may not ebb and flow so much these days. However, the cost of education is also pretty directly tied to availability of loans. It's pretty easy to keep raising tuition when you can keep getting "free" money.

This is an older article (June 2018), but it's good top level stats: https://www.credible.com/blog/statis...lt-statistics/

What's particularly revealing is that LOW LOAN amounts are far more likely to be in default. It's not the $100,000 loans, it's the $5000 loans -- the kids that took money and never finished school. 65% of defaults were on loans of less than $10,000 (2016)

This would, again, very much highlight extremely poor decision-making as the cause of the default -- on both ends.

                        • It's also worth noting that for-profit institutions have the highest proportion of student debt and the highest rate of default (by far). So University of Phoenix or Nova Southeastern, etc. And that's entirely predictable, too. Those schools market to the the left-side of the bell curve. 2-year schools are next. Traditional 4-year public and private schools remain very low.

                          • Shrugs .... it's the lens thing. I'm looking at all of this through a different lens than you appear to be. Bolton has made it clear on a number of interviews that his job is to provide the president with facts and options. It does not matter that he is depicted in the media as an Iran Hawk and from all accounts, he is. So what? Same with Pompeo. Both have a role in the Trump administration but Trump decides. Bolton has made that point crystal clear to anyone that asks about it. What is concerning to you about anything Trump said in the Time interview? My take is that it's pretty measured.

But, to your point ....... There are going to be differences of opinions within an administration and it seems this one in particular. The media likes to depict this as evidence of confusion. If that sort of take resonates with your view, you can nod your head and go, "Uhh, Huhh," or if you take a more accommodating view of the apparent quirks or what might be considered mis-steps within the current administration, you can sort of say, "so what."
