  • IMO, people who are doing well or well enough aren't inclined toward big change. So economic discussions may change, but I have a hard time getting away from what I consider to be a bedrock principle of politics.

Now, there's plenty of people who aren't doing well who may be fine with rolling the dice for something better. But, the problem, politically, is that a lot of those people are still white. And not just white, the dreaded white working class. The folks people on the far left look down with, in some cases, utter contempt. The folks who actually vote against self-interest because of the incessant white privilege talking points. The folks who might have or were convinced to vote for Bernie when Bernie was just talking economics.

Again, IMO, when you "big tent" as much as the Ds are big tenting, commonality of interest is really hard so you may tend toward commonality of "enemy." The Ds have two defined enemies at the moment -- Wall Street/Big Business and white males. If they just stuck with what Sanders is inclined to do -- the "socialist" part -- they'd have a very credible chance on economics. But they are Progressive "Socialists" and that means they do both. And that's a huge lifeline for the Rs. Of course, they have their own issues.

    • at some point I am expecting the unholy alliance of the leftist radicals to fall apart. intersectionallity isn't a system that I see lasting forever, eventually the Muslims hatred of women and gays and jews will win out, the hatred of CIS white women by their lesbian of color counterparts. Literally the only thing holding them all together is their hatred of the straight white male.

      • It's a tenuous alliance. For example, Hispanics tend to more Catholic than other groups. AA's are considerably more church-going than Whites. At some point, the Ds overt disgust with religion would have to hurt them with these groups. I think it far more likely to happen with Hispanics. I also think "their votes" are very much up for grabs.

The potential Green New deal is a case in point here. If you just wanted to tackle climate change, you have a lot of people in support. With all the other nonsense you start losing support.

Unfortunately for Bernie, this is not a time "It's the economy, stupid". Even though it should be. White idiots on the left can vote against their own self-interest too.

              • I mostly agree about the "Green New Deal". I think there is broad support for sensible approaches to climate change and I'm absolutely stupefied when I actually read the "Green New Deal." One could certainly articulate a climate change policy as you have that is stripped of, well, non-climate change policy, and poll high enough to get at least something passed. It's not a hard sell to push for more R&D dollars and less coal subsidies (the Ds have already lost WV by a landslide, so who cares -- and Ohio is probably tough for them, but PA is getting better).

For the Dems, yes. For the Republicans, no. This is why the Left is so fond of censorship and laws that restrict "hate speech". Granted, they have always been big into censorship, but they have stepped up their efforts dramatically since 2016.

We haven't seen the full effect of this yet in the United States, but European governments are now openly policing speech, literally sending the cops to people's houses for wrongthink tweets. Do not think for a fucking second that they don't want to do the same thing here. So far in America, that job has been outsourced to Google, Twitter, and Facebook. Besides ignoring The Wall until it was too late, Trump's biggest strategic blunder was not preventing the censorship of his loudest supporters.

And even if the Republicans succeed by the silent approach, they lose the long game because they don't pursue issues. After a couple of generations of ideological castration, you end up with "White Privilege" classes at college, 9 year old drag queens, and open borders. We can't afford for our guys to shut up anymore.

There is no sensible approach to "climate change". Or at least nothing has yet been proposed that is sensible. Anything that is proposed in the West will, at best, lower the temperature of the Earth by a small fraction of a degree at the cost of a couple of generations worth of economic growth while India and China continue build coal plants and oil refineries. This is why I don't get hung up on Drumpf tariffs since they are pennies on the dollar compared to what "climate change" costs are going to be.

Rather than seeing religion move minorities to the right, I think that you are seeing religion move to the Left. Or should I say, "back to the Left". The alliance between Right Wingers and Christianity is somewhat of a 20th Century (or maybe just post-WWII) phenomenon. Without state-sponsored Communism as a threat, I think that you are seeing that paradigm dissolve. Case in point -- The Pope might as well be Bernie Sanders. There is an altruism baked into Christianity that borders on suicidal.

I don't see any pushback against cultural rot coming from the Religious Right. That institution as a vehicle for politics is basically dead. The pushback that I see right now is coming from young secular rebel types. The new Right Wing Puritans are young white men who play video games and watch wrestling.

This dissolution will only take place after they have won final victory and you and I aren't a viable enemy anymore.
