  • If real wages weren't stagnant for the past generation, and capital gains taxed at a ludicrously low level, there'd be no need for redistribution. So, once again again, start the analysis at the beginning, please.

The whole thing is an invitation to return to the economic theory that got us here in the first place. Ultimately, this is a market failure -- anti-competitive forces conspired to remove freedoms from market participants, in this case collective bargaining. Adam Smith was vociferous about the need to control those anti-competitive forces. He was not a market fundamentalist in the way that people who cite him today are. Those people rarely venture beyond a few chapters of his work. They ignore the inconvenient ones.

As Giulianis unforced errors pile up, former West Wing officials and 2016 campaign veterans are privately debating whats gone wrong with Rudy.

        • Less need to redistribute if initial distribution is according to the theory they claimed to be acting on. Or at least a smaller need. Wages have been stagnant since 1979; the cost of living has gone up. The longer it goes on like this the greater redistribution becomes, by default. But the need for corrective measures against anti-competitive behavior was a part of Adam Smith they did not like. Stagnation correlates with unionbusting. They cherry-picked the bits they liked and recast the ideas in a more fundementalist way than originally conceived.

So basically in a span of just a couple days there's been stories in the NY Times, Washington Post, Vanity Fair, and Politico all about how Trump's fed up with Rudy and "White House officials" are flummoxed by his loose lips in interviews.

                  • Well, I have rental property in Fort Lauderdale. The couple renting are very nice, have two kids and she is pregnant with their third. They are both hard workers. He is warehouse manager and she is a nurse working for a public agency that depends on Federal grants from an agency that is shut down due to Donald Trump's unwillingness to abandon his wall. They can't pay the rent. I just sent them a note saying not to worry about it for now. Pay what you can but don't empty your bank account so you can't pay for food, electric, car, etc.

The scale of the financial stress that working people are going through as a result of Trump's government shut down - and make no mistake this is all about him and his ego - is unprecedented and entirely avoidable. Sure Pelosi is playing hard ball but it is exactly what she did when she was speaker and W wanted to privatize Social Security. She boxed him in by refusing to entertain any legislation that threatened to change SS in any way and he was forced to abandon his legislative promises on SS.

People laugh at W for being stupid. We need to rethink the definition of stupid presidents and the ones that are senselessly uncaring about the people they govern.

                    • Donald Trump's second year of his presidency has landed him in "good" company with other presidents who have been in the oval office watching stock market declines. The numbers suggest that Trump's domestic and international policies, especially with regard to trade, as well as the consistent WH statements at odds with the Fed's monetary policy are beginning to take their toll on investor sentiment. This, after it has become apparent that Trump either has no workable trade policy or the one he has embarked upon is disastrous:

incident of the dude yelling "it's not rape if you enjoy it" wasn't even a student at this school.

It is remarkable how dishonest the left is, and how an anti Semitic member of the Democrat house is straight up lying about these kids and defending a hate group. Not a peep from the main stream press that started all of this because they couldn't be bothered to take 5 more min and search for the entire footage. Not a peep from Democratic Congressional Leadership either. This is the main difference between the right's reaction to Steve King and his comments, he was booted from his committee assignments, and everyone on the right came out to condemn his language. Nothing from the left.
