  • I watched Chump's speech last night (but not the rebuttal). A few of things struck me.

    1) Trump did not veer off the script. He read the teleprompter and didn't ad lib. I surprised his head didn't explode.

    2) Trump appears to suffer from Arafat Syndrome - he never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Tripling down on his crisis falsehood is hardly a hallmark of a 'dealmaker' and 'great negotiator'. Or someone who recognizes much less values the truth.

    3) Trump has a new speech writer and coach. The rhetoric was toned down but the words were clearly not Trump's. I was amused by his attempt at a 'steely eyed gaze'. It doesn't work with an orange skin tone.

    4) Congress has repeatedly put forth a budget offering that provides for all of the GOP border security requests except a wall. New tech, increased manpower, repair of barriers, expanded facilities. Everything. Yet Trump continues to attempt to shift his own personal failure to his political opposition. He tries to shift dem opposition to the wall to opposition to border security. A complete and utter falsehood but hey, it's Trump, so no surprise.

    5) Scare tactics by 'cherrypicking' crime to illustrate illegal aliens are heinous criminals. For balance, here are some proud members of the GOP:
    a) Nicholas Elizondo: Director of the Young Republican Federation. Molested his six- year-old daughter & sentenced to six years in prison.
    b) Jeffery Patti: Republican Committee Chairman. Arrested for distributing a video clip of a five-year-old girl being raped.
    c) Dennis Rader, otherwise known as the BTK (Blind, Torture, Kill) Serial Killer was a registered Republican.
    d) Theodore Robert Cowell, (aka Ted Bundy), worked on the re-election campaign of Washington's Republican Governor Dan Evans. Evans was elected
and he appointed Bundy to the Seattle Crime Prevention Advisory Committee. He also became assistant to Ross Davis, chairman of the Washington
    State Republican Party.

    6) Completely and totally surprised that "No witch hunt!" did not find its way into the speech. I figured that in Trumpworld, Mueller would be cast as the unseen hand behind the "border invasion".

CNN did a rather tame fact check of the speech.

Republicans demanded time (and got it) to Obama's address regarding the debt in 2011. John Boehner gave the rebuttal. Wasn't a SOTU

President Trump sought to go over the heads of Congress to enlist support for his border wall, raising the stakes of a conflict that has closed many federal agencies.

      • After a lot of caveats, a Fox host gets Howie Kurtz to acknowledge that it's not remotely 'unprecedented' for networks to refuse to air a Presidential speech. Nor does that only happen near the end of a term. Heck, they even show an example that Fox refused to air an Obama speech just months into his presidency.

                              • What is so hard about spelling forest? Why the continued unneeded capitalization?

There isn't a magical way to properly manage a forest to not have forest fires. You have to let them burn, which can damage property or you can stop forest fires, which can damage property more when it finally does burn. There is no magical solution and its been a debate for over a century and a half in the west.
