Trump now threatening to put tariffs on every single import from China. Kudlow says they think China is happy to cease negotiations until after the mid-terms. That is bad news for farmers expecting this resolved before harvest.
Geezer previously suggested that China can't win a trade war with the US because we import much more from them than vice versa and we can 'hurt' them more. This piece gives some indication as to why that's not true. For one, they are far less responsive to ordinary citizens being harmed by economic policy. Secondly, they are a state-run economy and have all sorts of levers to artificially prop up the economy that the US does not have. And I I've previously said, the Chinese government has the power to impose frivolous new regulatory laws out of thin air and there's little US companies in China can do about it.

China says FU to us and nationalizes the factories built and/or owned by US businesses. All those assets and sources of cheap product enjoyed by business goes away. (China has survived quite nicely over the last 6 thousand years without interacting with the outside world, they could withdraw again and still be around for another 6000 years.) The US retaliates by defaulting on all Chinese held bonds, notes, and T-Bills. What happens? The US debt is vastly reduced (good) but business plunges into a depression with massive bankruptcies due to loss of assets and cheap product stream that has no alternative source. China would not be catastrophically injured by the defaults as the money lent back to us was from obscene profits generated by US businesses engaged in China in the first place. Think of visiting a casino. You have $500 in your pocket you're willing to lose. If it gets taken in one fell swoop, eh, its not life changing. There is still the rest of the world to trade with and all of a sudden there's lots of cheap capacity for others to take advantage of.
But to today. Say China increases their tariffs to a dollar level equal to US tariffs. It becomes a stalemate as you suggest. Then what is the Pumpkinfuhrer going to do? Roll back his tariffs in a simpering admission of economic defeat? I doubt it, his ego won't let that happen. He'll let the USA go down in flames first. His only options at that point are to capitulate to China or escalate in other manners while allowing US businesses to bear the brunt of his idiocy.
Trump's actions can't solve this puzzle, he needs to buy a vowel.“Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.” - Groucho Marx

And I make those statements not because I think Trump can win in 2020, but like 2016, I do believe the D's can lose the election. If people are ignoring you, time to change the approach.Grammar... The difference between feeling your nuts and feeling you're nuts.
