Because they went by the language of the executive order rather than Trump's own interpretation of what was in the EO (e.g. "Muslim Ban"), which I think is fair.

      • Trump threatens Harley-Davidson with crushing taxes if they won't do as he demands.

Under another President, our Trumpist legion here would declare this socialism. Under this President, however, it's merely 'patriotism'.

        • yes, because their product will be taxed coming back into the US. I highly doubt that they will ever close up all manufacturing in the US, but that would be the consequence if they did. which they wont.

They contract their parts to other countries like Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Italy and Mexico. My question is it cheaper now to build those components here or move an entire assembly overseas, for sales in Europe, that answer is probably build them over there.

            • Trade wars are easy to win according to the Trump cult. Somebody should tell that supreme dumbass Trump that Harley Davidson already builds motocycles in other countries. Read up dummy. There are shifting production to avoid tariffs, duh.

They are moving some production to Europe in order to sell motorcycles THERE to avoid the retaliatory tariffs. They aren't intending to turn around and export them back into the US.

Then his comment doesn't apply. And if it doesn't apply, let it fly (don't get your panties in a bunch over it)

                  • You aren't going to get far with Kapture DSL, waste of time.

This is a window to the mind of Trump's faulty understanding of trade. He allegedly wants to place tariffs on German luxury cars to make sure he never sees any of them on 5th Ave. He doesn't get that a lot of the foreign cars are built here, duh. If you place tariffs higher they'll import less than the 20 percent. Conversely you won't be exporting much high end items like cars because of the retaliatory tarrifs. The reverse will happen with Harleys, they have a robust market in Europe and they already build them over there.

                    • I think the president just wants fair trade. I think he would rather see zero tariffs across the board.

                            • I don't feel sorry for Harley Davidson, I cant believe how loyal I was to them for so many years. I had 2 shovel-heads and a fat-boy and did plenty of pushing (not riding). The only people buying Harleys now are middle aged men going through mid life crises and the dentist and doctors playing leather clad biker who like spending money - top end CVO dresser is stickered at over $80,000. Maintenance & Parts are also way overpriced. You would think that these rude people at dealerships could be more competitive if they offered average-lower labor rates.

I have maybe 4 guys left I know who still ride and most are always bitching about the service at ABC Harley-Davidson here, one friend they had his bike for almost a month last year for routine maintenance ?

With so many boomers suddenly getting out of riding you would think they could look at Triumph, Indian, and the Japanese all understand that you need to keep the product fresh and fun in order to keep the youths interested. It sucks people are losing their jobs, but damn, if ever a company lazily rested on its laurels and rode brand recognition into oblivion it was Harley. Harley did it to themselves. Honda (they save Harley from going out of business once) their shit still flies out of the dealerships. But keep selling those overpriced jewelry, shirts do-rags, and leather jackets should keep them a float.

A number of the articles I've posted noted that Harley sales have been declining in the US for years and they are increasingly relying on overseas sales.
