Why do you think AT&T or Comcast were throttling in secret? Why not do so openly? There was no law against it. It's because they knew the majority of the public would be pissed and could threaten to pass actual legislation.

Yeah big bloated cable companies just want to save consumers money and have so much innovation to share with us...right. The biggest 'innovation', according to Kapture, being...drumroll... PACKAGES!!!...which they've been doing with tv for decades.

Because no one noticed. Which means it wasnt that burdensome. And if they were refraining for going overboard wothout NN, then why was it needed in the first place? What a joke, just regulation for the sake of regulation. "They arent going overboard because of the threat of NN, so lets pass NN anyways".

There does seem to be some level of chicken little stuff on net neutrality. Legally, it's quite interesting. The FCC made its rule in 2015 that the internet fell within the ambit of the Federal Communication Act and thus was subject to neutrality rules. The decision was challenged and the DC Circuit Ct ruled 2-1 in favor of the FCC. Presumably the appeal was dropped when DJT came into office.

I remember thinking the reclassification was an overreach at the time. There were other reasons, I think. I'd have to go look it up.

All that said, what the FCC is doing is going back to 2015. I don't think it's quite so simple; I do think there will be changes. And I don't like any of this happening at an administrative level. But, at the end of the day it's hard to imagine some sort of sweeping, sea-change.

Like I said, the threat of passing net neutrality LAWS was hanging over the ISP's for years and years before 2015, particularly when the Dems still controlled all Congress. Let's keep in mind that streaming as a method of content delivery has been around only a decade, at max, and probably most people didn't use it until the past 5 years. Cable companies really had their hands tied trying to start charging more for it under a Dem President and earlier the Dem Congress.

But now? The R's have made it pretty clear they have no interest in any sort of net neutrality LAW and the Admin is tearing up the administrative rules. There's nothing to fear from the govt stepping in.

If this shit had been does as it should be -- through Congress -- then it becomes much more difficult. If it were a Congressional Act then this entire thing would be a non-starter.

Perhaps the Ds should have actually passed something when they were in power -- instead of holding out the "threat".

Hey, sure, the Dems failed to get a law passed. Just enough of them broke off from the party line to kill multiple bills. The Republicans have never had the slightest bit of interest in a law.

Right now the cable companies only fear is if they make dramatic changes right away, there could be enough public outcry to pressure even Republican politicians. Otherwise there is no threat of govt intervention.
