      • It seems that the screw up was to allow the people to be seated rather than taking their seat from them prior to boarding.
Yes. That is what I heard too. I heard a lawyer opine that once the passenger is seated, or let onto the plane, the ticket contract is fulfilled. It seems the fine print allows the airline to refuse boarding, but once allowed, the contract moves from executory to fulfilled. I guess the basic problem is that flight crews are so tightly scheduled that getting them where they need to be takes priority over any other factor. I agree that if they would offer a decent amount for folks to give up their seats, this problem might be avoided. Glad to see UAL stock down substantially (6% pre-market, 3% this am).

When I used to travel a lot for the Coast Guard, I would stand by the desk in the terminal to be close when they asked for people to give up their seats so I could get the free flight voucher. I think that they aren't as generous as they were twenty years or so ago. More vouchers for a couple hundred bucks off rather than totally free flights.

I'd say the screw up is around resource management and contingency plans... why do you need to kick someone off the plane to get a Cree to another city. Should have plans or contingencies for emergencies that don't require kicking paying customers off...

Yes... things could have been differently, but I think the solve is further upstream.

It was a blustery and frozen night as I entered the dank, austere surroundings of the Liberty Bowl on the late December night of 1982. Slow barges lumbered down the Mighty River. Blues bands played a somber dirge - as if they were heralding in a fresh lamb to the slaughter.

The Mighty Fighting Illini were big. They were strong. They were mean. The wounded and much-beleaguered Crimson Tide team formed a thin red line as they shielded themselves from the cold and valiantly headed onto the tundra that night.

The rifle-armed All-American, Tony Eason, set his angular jaw against the gale-like, frozen winds on that dark Memphis night. Like a gridiron Baryshnikov, Eason’s 6’4” frame danced nimbly through the pregame warm-ups as he focused his mind on the task at hand: Embarrassing – no humiliating – the great, but terminally ill Paul Bryant and his rag-tag band of undersized and injured players...

Head Coach of the Mighty Fighting Illini, Mike White, knew a pro career lay ahead of him. He chuckled slightly as he perused the gameplan and thought to himself, “This is Bryant’s last game. I’ll make him wish he’d quit sooner.”

The ailing Bryant grimaced as he slowly emerged from the tunnel. Heart disease was killing him and he knew his doctors had warned him about coaching this game, especially considering the extremely harsh weather. He struggled to keep from letting his family – the players – see him in such mind-searing pain as he covertly placed a nitroglycerin tablet under his tongue. He never wanted this game to be about him. He simply wanted the players to hold their heads high and compete honorably for the University, their families, and most importantly, themselves.

“Make your mamas proud," he growled as the last of the players and trainers ran from the tunnel.

Somehow, Alabama had managed to keep it close through most of the game; however, Eason was driving his team for what should have been the winning score. But Alabama's defense came through one last time for Bryant. Afterward, the young Illinois coach said that he had never seen a team hit as hard as Alabama that day. Bama was outgunned and out-manned, but they played with incredible heart and won the game for Bear on desire and grit alone.

That fateful Liberty Bowl was played on December 29, 1982. Less than one month later Bryant would die of heart disease. Coincidentally, less than one month after that, his beloved wife of 59 years, Mary Harmon Bryant, would die, too.

From the time Bryant first prowled the sidelines at the University of Alabama in 1958, until the day he died in 1983, no other team in the Nation won as many games, had as high of a winning percentage, or as many championships. And no one was really even close.

No question. I have an acquaintance who works in the Cardio-thoracic unit at the VA hospital in Atlanta. Starts at 9:30a and leaves at 5p. The clinic does not see patients between 11:30 and 1p (uhhh, maybe that's why VA clinics are always so far behind!!! - not my monkey; not my circus).

Anyway, she gets great perks as you mention and has a life. PAs working with Carido-thoracic surgeons in private practice may make more but they work 80h weeks and it's a lot of scutt work (post surgical follow-ups, drains, that kind of stuff).

Sugeons, all of them are nutz......they thrive on a work schedule like this. It comes from their residency training, up to 8y, where they make shit for compensation and are absolutely abused.

PAs working in these cardio-thoracic group practices end up driving all over Atlanta to do pre-ops, post ops, review charts for post op hospitalized patients in all the hospitals these guys do procedures at. That's how they make money. Not in thier offices or doing rounds but by doing procedures. It's a crazy life for the MD surgeons but the one's that get into this and stay in it are making a shit ton of money. Some of that flows towards their PA's compensation but, IMO, not enough to work that hard.

My son is a Dentist. He did a lot of his preceptorships in the Dental Ward of the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor before he graduated from M's dental school. During his residency, he was a preceptor there. He's a smart guy ...... he works at the Ann Arbor VA and loves it. He actually gets to play with his kids when they get home from school, take them to events and all the stuff great Dad's do for them.

                  • Related to Alabama malfeasance, I always thought Tom Bearenger was a remarkably convincing Bear Bryant. Spot on, really. Almost as if The Bear was actually alive and on the big screen. Probably the most accurate on-screen portrayal since at least The Big Chill depicted M fans and grads.

SWA is great. I've got a good story. When I left the USMC in 1990, one of my plans was to get on with the airlines. So, I did all the standard stuff to do that. I applied to every airline flying internationally - the big guys.

But, I still applied to Southwest and to do that you had to get a type rating in a 737. So, I did that, passed my flight physical, proved I could fly their 737 flight simulator without crashing it and got to the phone interview stage. I was 90% hired.

The interview was with a female Captain. I was one cocky SOB at that point in my life. She said, "well, I see you passed your physical and didn't crash the simulator." I knew the atmosphere around SW was really relaxed. They liked relaxed, not up-tight like Delta or American. I responded, "not only am I a terrific pilot but I still need a part of my physical done, do I see you about that."

                      Click.

                      I went to PA school.
