    Rather than mandate insurance coverage, write the fucking check. We can debate all day long about whether the government should pay for it, but if you decide that it should, then don't fuck around with mandating insurance coverage -- be honest.
    And would the same line of thought apply for mandated mileage standards?

    I'd love to have been in the room when these dreamers were arguing what the standard was to be in 2025. One wanted 54 and one wanted 55 so they split the difference? Anyone who knows anything about statistics knows that the .5 mpg eight years from now is meaningless (except to bureaucrats).

    Anyway, lower mpg standards would save/bring American jobs. Climate change believers pushed/are pushing for the highest possible number.

    And remember, this whole mandated fuel efficiency policy arose when oil was in short supply. What happens when gas is $ 1.89 per gallon and you have no trucks or large cars available? I'll bet this mandate would never have been made in the first place if the government simply passed a law outlawing cars of a certain weight. I suspect Williamson would prefer the law to the mandate.

            The reason there was an auto bailout in the first place was that the Big 3 placed too much emphasis on the gas guzzlers while the rest of the world went with more efficient fuel cars. But this is part of a Carbon bubble the Trump administration is creating. It is all about a short term gain for some long term pain.

                          Total American production is weighted toward bigger cars. Total Mexican production is more weighted toward small, light, fuel-efficient cars. It takes roughly the same amount of labor to produce any car or truck. Labor makes up a larger percentage of the cost of production of an inexpensive car.

                          Lowering the fuel standards, actually not raising them, allows more mid-sized cars to be made in the US because that's were the factories are. Remember, the fuel standards are fleet averages, and in order to sell high profit "loaded" big cars, they have to produce a large number of little cars.

                          This all came up in the context of the NR article Talent posted from the guy named Williamston. The writer's thesis was something on the order of "mandates are a non-transparent way of establishing a welfare program, and I'd (writer) prefer the government just cut a check to recipients rather than try to backdoor it through a mandate". And, I said that IMO, Williamson would rather see a law limiting weight than all this nonsense of fuel standards.

                          I just think that these standards look far different now that we are swimming in oil. Of course, the climate religionists want the rest of us to "submit" to their belief system, but that is another issue. There is no good reason we can't buy the cars we want rather than the cars that the statists want us to have.

                          And the biggest reason for the "auto bailout" was that GM and Chrysler had substantial financing arms that went belly-up in the financial crisis. A reasonable person would ask "How is Ford different than GM, if Ford didn't need a bailout?" Answer: far less credit exposure; no GMAC.

                                Ford started 2 years prior to the Great Recession making the changes needed. Bill Ford Jr. admitted that he didn't have the expertise to do what needed to be done and hired Alan Mullany (spelling?) to take the reigns at Ford. Ford made the changes they needed to (changes that GM and Chrysler/FCA would be forced to make). They saw the cliff before the other two companies. Given credit where it is due Geezer.
