Sadly, there are a lot more non-engaged parents than I would have guessed. Last few years have been eye opening.

Please support the Forum by using the Amazon Link this Holiday Season
Amazon has started their Black Friday sales and there are some great deals to be had! As you shop this holiday season, please consider using the forum's Amazon.com link (listed in the menu as "Amazon Link") to add items to your cart and purchase them. The forum gets a small commission from every item sold.
Additionally, the forum gets a "bounty" for various offers at Amazon.com. For instance, if you sign up for a 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime, the forum will earn $3. Same if you buy a Prime membership for someone else as a gift! Trying out or purchasing an Audible membership will earn the forum a few bucks. And creating an Amazon Business account will send a $15 commission our way.
If you have an Amazon Echo, you need a free trial of Amazon Music!! We will earn $3 and it's free to you!
Your personal information is completely private, I only get a list of items that were ordered/shipped via the link, no names or locations or anything. This does not cost you anything extra and it helps offset the operating costs of this forum, which include our hosting fees and the yearly registration and licensing fees.
Stay safe and well and thank you for your participation in the Forum and for your support!! --Deborah

Balancing a checkbook, credit card debt would be a good subject to have, although both things are concepts that are better learned as you have some experience with it. High schoolers really don't have that knowledge. It is very similar to learning grammar and English early on in life before you have written a damn thing.

Well I was good at the latter, but sure did need real-life experience with the former. If there's one aspect of financial literacy that needs to be driven home, it's the time value of money. An interest rate is so abstract compared with using it to calculate total repayment costs over the life of a debt.

8 major changes if Tom Price's (the new HHS) bill gets through.
Some highlights:
1) Everything about Obamacare is ripped away including the state insurance markets set up right now. Instead based on age (not income) you buy your insurance on the private market. And you will get a credit of $1200 to $3000 for your insurance.
2) Insurers cannot refuse you if you have a preexisting condition PROVIDED you have had insurance for at least 18 months of continuous coverage. If let your insurance lapse you could pay up to 150% of the standard premiums for up to 2 years.
3) Expanded use of HSAs
4) A cap on the amount of money that companies could deduct from their taxes to defray the cost of providing health insurance to their workers. Price?s approach would limit the employer tax exclusion for providing health insurance to $8,000 a year for individual policies and $20,000 for families.
5) Price would repeal the expanded Medicaid coverage in 32 states and the District of Columbia for able-bodied single people and leave those current beneficiaries to fend for themselves on the open market, using other tax credits and benefits.
6) It would eliminate Obamacare-style mandates for insurers to include a standard package of benefits such as maternity services and pediatric care and allow them to offer cheaper, less comprehensive policies to younger people who are looking for a bargain. At the same time, insurers could jack up the premiums and copayments on their oldest enrollees by as much as the market would bear.2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR
