  • Arguably small-government conservatism never really existed save other than being pablum. A fig leaf for people to focus on whilst spending is shifted to military pork wherever possible.

Possibly. The Republican Party pretty much got dragged kicking and screaming into the Reagan era. Since the mid 1990s the Republicans have let talk radio and Fox News do all of their work for them. Since these sources only reach a niche audience, the ideology only has a niche appeal.

      • New York voting today. The beginning of the end for Bernie Sanders, who has been accumulating victories mostly in pretty small states with minimal black/Hispanic populations, who vote Hillary because -- reasons. This produced the illusion that Sanders is actually competing for the nomination.

        • I wish it were the end of the end for Sanders, but the feckless socialist dimbulb will carry on.

          • He'll carry on but he'll be mathematically eliminated soon. Despite all of the banter about superdelegates, Hillary is leading in regular delegates too and that lead will grow from this point forward. Hillary has a double digit lead in Pennsyvania, MD, and CA and a six point lead in CT. She will probably sweep every remaining April state, as will Trump.

            • Well, yeah -- he's been beat for some time now. But the sooner he goes away the sooner I significantly lower my risk of inadvertently hearing him spew some god-fucking-awful stupid talking point.

                • I wish that I could grudgingly give Bernie Sanders some credit for making the cost of college a front-and-center issue. It's a disaster and it has got to be fixed. It needed to be fixed 20 years ago. But I have yet to hear any politician address it in a realistic way, so that means that the "free" solution will probably be the one that is chosen in the end.

You continually surround yourself with Ohio State fans and you haven't developed an immunity to "god-fucking-awful stupid"? I guess evolution is slower in some states.

                      • Yes they shouldn't have been in the business of picking winners,
So basically, various Solyndras aside, on a global basis this worked as it was supposed to.
And, other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

Let's just remember that the subsidies given to solar are not only to the corporate level, but also at the consumer level.

Seriously, the reason I brought up fusion was because CGVT was proposing an Apollo-type program and I believe fusion would be a worthy goal. It may be impossible, but it is mathematically possible and we should investigate it. It would only leave a waste product of water. As for fission, I've always wondered why a reactor that can be used on a ship cannot be used to create energy for a city.

And global warming is certainly not settled science. It is neither "settled" nor "science" The climate alarmists have never accurately predicted weather even five years in the future. Why should we believe they can do any better for 84 years in the future. It took mankind about 60 years from the invention of the airplane to go to the moon. Why do we believe technology will be stagnant?

The only reasonable explanation for the left's infatuation with climate change is control. There is simply no problem that cannot be blamed on CC. Isis had its origins in CC, so now there is talk of prosecuting climate deniers as war criminals. I tremble.

                          • Don't you think we're being controlled by the oil industry now?

I am not sure that we are causing climate change, but even if it is happening (I believe that it is) and is nothing more than natural weather cycle, doesn't it make sense to quit dumping shit into our environment?

We've done some pretty serious damage in a geological blink of the eye.

To me, it makes sense to do all we can to shift from fossil fuels as quickly as we can.

I'm of the mind, let's not do anything that could potentially really harm our earth.
