According to Reeve Hamilton of the Texas Tribune, University of Texas at Austin president Bill Powers is being forced out of his job.

The report says that Powers has been asked to resign by University of Texas System chancellor Francisco Cigarroa ahead of the July 10 meeting of the Board of Regents to avoid being fired during it. The story reports that Powers has refused to do so but is open to discussing a schedule for his exit from the position.

As The Dallas Morning News' David Barer has written, in his first few years as the president of the University of Texas at Austin, Bill Powers’ job evaluations were glowing notes of praise. But the reports quickly became much more critical at about the same time Powers and the governing regents began to tussle over structural changes at UT. Job evaluations from 2008 to 2013, obtained by The Dallas Morning News under the state’s open records law, spotlight the years-long dust up between UT Austin’s administration and the UT System and its regents.

In December of 2013, the Board of Regents kept Powers in his position, though Cigarroa said at the time that there were 'strained relations' between the governing body of the UT system and the leader of the 131-year-old campus.

Powers was a key figure in the power struggle in December 2013 that led to Mack Brown's exit as coach of the Texas Longhorns football team and the hiring of Charlie Strong for that post.
