I believe Garcia had his day in court back in 2019 and was ordered to be removed with the exception that he can’t be sent back to El Salvador. The mistake was that they sent him to El Salvador not that he was deported.

I think it is pretty obvious, and has been for at least the last 6 months, that Putin has no intention of ending his "Special Operation" in Ukraine. That's because he believes he can obtain his desired goals there without crippling the Russian State (damage to/from sanctions, foreign relations, the Russian economy, trade).

Since he failed 3 years ago with his blitzkrieg on Kiev intended to quickly force the Zelenski government out and install a puppet government, since the "coalition of the willing" has provided enough economic and military support to sustain Zelenski and be a pain in the ass to the RA, Putin has modified his goals and is adapting on the battlefield. Putin plans on outlasting global attempts to either defeat, and barring that, isolate Russia, by out numbering the UA on the battlefield and coalescing support from the countries willing and able to sustain his political and military operational goals in Ukraine.

Trump is being played. Putin holds all the cards in how this game will play out. Trump's declaration that he'll end the war in Ukraine just makes putin smile because he knows that he is desperately looking for a deal. Sending Whitkof to Moscow to begin direct negotiations with Putin raised all kinds of alarm bells among congressional hawks on both sides of the aisle. That's because Whitkof has publicly articulated, and reports indicate actually offered to Putin last Friday, US support for Putin's demands to bring 4 Ukrainian Oblasts, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, under Russian control. Doing that is completely contrary to what had been the western coalition's, once including the US, political objectives: deny Russian expansion westward towards European borders and demonstrate united western resolve against Putin's expansionist, empire building goals.

Like Trump's tariff extravaganza, there are clear divisions inside the West Wing between two sides seeking Trump's ear on Ukraine. This seems to be Trump's MO - what appears to be chaos to reporters weighing in about these divides is SOP for Trump wrt evolving major policy development. This approach is vastly different than decades of previous US administrations that routinely presented one clear path on evolving national and foreign policy. Under Trump, the US has become unpredictable and unreliable to foreign allies. Given the apparently divided status regarding US trade policy and how the Trump administration views the war in Ukraine, it has become almost impossible to see where either policy is headed. IMO, not the way to best forward for America.

                              • I'd ask, "what is THE message on trade and tariffs?" If there is one I don't know what it is. Trump has given vague reasons for the "pause." What we have here then are easily interpreted by the engaged listener to fit their private views of the reasons for the "pause" along with multiple underlying reasons for implementing the tariffs themselves. (IMO, as I have posted here, the fundamentals arguing for tariffs are clear). That includes his economic advisors. I'm not sure that's what he wants, said advisors being interviewed and offering their views of what's going on with US trade policy. I think we do know that their are strong opinions, a divide so to speak in the West Wing seeking Trump's ear, on tariffs and how to implement them. OTH, that could be all part of his well established MO of keeping his opposites at the negotiating table unaware of his hand. If that is the case, it represents a major departure from well established diplomatic negotiations where the hands of the players at the table know what each other's cards are by the time major policies are endorsed, action implemented and made public.
