  • BTW, US manufacturing output has continued to go up almost every single year since the late 90's. We just employ fewer and fewer people in that sector and it's a shrinking part of US GDP.. I said this months ago but many people are exaggerating the importance of free trade agreements on the loss of manufacturing jobs. What has probably had a bigger impact is automation and technology. Do we want to try and reverse all that too for the sake of employing as many people as possible?

        • My dad worked the assembly line at Ford for over 30 years. It was a good-paying union job but it slowly destroyed his health over time. By the time he retired he had continual back pain that sometimes kept him in bed all day. The last thing he wanted for any of his kids was for us to go work alongside him at the plant after high school.

I think a lot of people are now romanticizing and glamorizing this type of work for whatever reason. Far from it. And I wonder how many of those people ever actually did those type of jobs. Peter Navarro and Trump sure as hell didn't

                • I spoke of the likelihood that negotiations between US and foreign country economic advisors over Trump's tariffs would ensue after they were imposed yesterday. IOW, Trump is interested in the coercive capacity of tariffs. This analysis agrees with that position and says Trump and his people have roughly 2 months to get most of them removed before permanent damage is done to markets world wide. I don't think this article is paywalled unless you've already visited this site and used up freebees.

You mean you have the old CD paperwork? Or is it somehow still earning interest?

I remember those days. I was still a young teenager working my first jobs and living at home. Those interest rates really got me into saving money at a young age.

Nobody knows what his ultimate goal is. If it's to reshore all manufacturing inside the US then why would he cut deals and negotiate with anyone? His rationale changes daily and country to country.

I will say that his list makes it clear that this was never about reciprocity. It doesn't matter to him if your country charges zero tariffs on US goods. If we run a trade deficit with you, we're coming after you.

                      • Singapore has zero tariffs on us and we actually run a trade surplus with them and they STILL made the list. 10% tariff. Explain the rationale behind that?

There are other trade barriers besides ones that impose monetary penalties, e.g., rules for product weight, size, or packaging; ingredient or identity standards; shelf-life restrictions; and import testing and certification procedures. I don't know what those might be for Singapore or any of the countries selected for tariffs. I don't know for a fact that Singapore (or other countries) have these kinds of technical barriers. It is, OTH, a rational explanation for them.
