We'll see what happens in the election up in Wisconsin on Tuesday. But yesterday in Louisiana the rightwing Governor was pushing hard for 4 constitutional amendments and all 4 went down in flames by about 65-35 margins. Liberals showed up to vote; MAGA did not.

              • Aha .. now we have a good reason to set fires to Tesla dealerships, and terrorize Tesla owners.

So maybe Musk should convert Teslas over to internal combustion engines, and become a Democrat.

AOC would scream with delight ...

They don't give a shit about anyone but themselves. They make a mess and then a Democrat has to come along and clean it up.

                    Just like their politics.

                        • Aside from the political "war" going on between libs and cons at home, there's a hot war going on between Russia and Ukraine. I just read a revealing NYT's piece (subscription) that illuminates the politics among involved general officers on both sides. You've all read about the conflicts between military leaders among the allies that for most historians are believed to have been set aside to vanquish Germany and Japan. Normandy, despite these high level conflicts, was a success and it lead to a foot-hold in Europe that ultimately expanded giving the allies the victory they sought in Europe. Of course, the atomic bomb ended the war in the Pacific and forced the Japanese to surrender. That's the historical analogy to the war in Ukraine that had a positive outcome for the allies.

There are similar high level military internal conflicts involved in Zelenski's Ukraine war versus Putin's Russia. The NYT's article, "The Secret History of the War in Ukraine," details a heretofore unknown level of American involvement in this war. The extent of it is surprising. It went way beyond the intelligence support provided by US assets to Ukraine that we've heard about. You've probably read about the simmering conflict between the US (NATO also a player) and Ukraine that involved the Ukrainian position that the allies were failing to provide support both in quantity and timing, were too concerned about igniting a wider war in Europe, and were holding the Ukrainian forces back. That contrasts with the US position that Ukrainian generals took steps counter to the military advice they received from the allies and routinely failed to exploit successes on the ground, gained by help from the west, by concentrating their forces at key points in the war. The failure of Ukraine's summer offensive of 2024 was alleged to be due to, on the Ukrainian side, not enough weapons from the allies and on the US side, by the failure of Ukraine's military to concentrate already limited numbers of troops to one axis of attack. Ukraine chose to try and execute a three axis attack with allegedly, insufficient manpower to do it.

We still don't know how this war will end so, it's hard to judge who is responsible, wrt to these two positions, for either victory or defeat. What is clear is that the underlying civilian politics among the allies - namely the election of Donald Trump to the US presidency - has completely changed the political landscape that existed under the Biden presidency. At face, it doesn't look good for Ukraine. But the level of US and allied involvement in this particular war revealed by the NYTs piece suggests that Trump is not likely to be able to unwind that. The danger here for Ukraine is primarily a dithering president Trump who, for very different reasons compared to Biden, who was probably overly cautious, ingratiates himself with Putin and likely seeks retribution or the threat of it for Zelenski's failure to act on Trump's request to investigate the Biden's business activities in Ukraine. That behavior has wide-ranging implications and none of them are good for Ukraine. OTH, the well established coordination between the militaries of the US and willing European nations, revealed in the NYT's piece, isn't going to go away and I don't think the combo of SecDef Hegseth and DJT have the wherewithal or moxie to make it go away. • Well, this could portend good news for Ukraine ....... or it could be another example of Trump's wavering national and foreign policies that make it difficult if not impossible for friends and foe to form, on a wide range of them, their own policies. What he does and says next week regarding the US position on Ukraine is basically anyone's guess.

"Donald Trump says he is ‘very angry’ with Vladimir Putin over Ukraine ....US president tells NBC he did not like his Russian counterpart questioning Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s credibility."

US president says his Russian counterpart’s questioning of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s credibility could delay ceasefire

                              • ...... and in the ME, Hamas is getting hammered. Israel resumed offensive air and ground operations in Gaza and bombed targets in Lebanon over the last 10 days. Not unexpectedly, rumors of peace negotiations continue to emanate from Egypt and Qatar. Netanyahu has no intention of negotiating with Hamas' demands where they refuse to disarm and for the leadership to leave Gaza. Those are both conditions that Netanyahu calls for in any cease fire.

"There are cracks" forming in Hamas' previous lock tight control of Palestinians in Gaza. Lots of demonstrations by local Palestinians chanting "out with Hamas." Demonstrators say they are tired of the war and death that Hamas has brought to Gaza. It's tough to watch the pictures of the suffering of Palestinian civilians but it is what it is going to take to defeat Hamas militarily and politically, in other words force their surrender to Israel. But, it's coming and can't be soon enough, IMO. Neither can the world's wish, especially among Arab nations, for a "two state solution." Cleary impractical given the terrorist's demands from clearly a position of weakness. It's telling that no one is coming, at least publically, to their aid including Iran. Good riddance to a decades long oozing scab in the ME - the use of terrorism by non-state actors to force the elimination of Israel. Not happening.
