About an hour ago, Judge James Boasberg in Washington DC issued a TRO based on a motion by The American Oversight, an independent advocacy group, to preserve all emails and texts relating to the Signal incident from 11-15 March. Judge Boasberg has ruled against Trump deportation policies in recent deportation hearings. Trump has called for his impeachment. He is no friend of the administration so, yea, the TRO was granted. Shocking!
There's some bigger issues involved here aside from the careless use of encrypted systems used for discussing military planning. The question involves how much civilian oversight should be allowed and authorized for sensitive military operations such as the strikes on Houthi terrorists carried out by the US military against Houthi targets in Yemen.
Let me be clear, I'm not defending the irresponsible actions of the key players in the Signal incident. Operational Security (OPSEC) is an important aspect of operations like the planned strikes from surface ships and aircraft carriers in the Red Sea. I don't know if Goldberg holds security clearances. I would think probably not .......it was a grave OPSEC violation to put him on the distribution list. Whoever did that, and it's probably Waltz, should have his security clearances revoked. What might follow for his career in government is a natural consequence of the errors in judgement he made.
OTH, the last thing that's needed is a bunch of civilians demanding, and worse being granted, oversight over military planning and execution of those plans. Even in subtle ways. Unfortunately, specific players in the Signal fiasco, are inviting it. In the face of demands for that from members of congress and the press, the president needs to stand firm on a hard no - not happening and, in that case, being a perverecating ass-hole, an obfuscator is the vehicle he's choosing to signal that. His critics don't like his behavior (nothing new) but dismissing the implications of the Signal incident in public and privately kicking ass would be, IMO, an acceptable approach. Openness and transparency in this kind of stuff isn't acceptable. Trump or people in his administration have no responsibility to act openly or with transparency in the face of criticism in this matter.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished.
