          • Cook's skewering of Trump is amusing if some of the shit he's said wrt Ukraine in the last few days crosses all diplomatic guardrails and protocol that have been established since, well, a long time ago. Diplomacy has a language and accepted behaviors. I don't think Trump cares about that. He likes to create chaos as evidenced by Zelenski's reaction to being called a dictator and a scrambling EU. He has established a record of intentionally creating chaos and from that, he expects, rightly or wrongly, that solutions and paths forward will emerge from it. IDK in this particular case.

I do see a grand strategy that intends to up-end the status quo in Ukraine and, as I posted up thread, some kind of nuclear armaments deal as a quid-pro-quo from Putin for the US taking unknown, as of now, steps involving withdrawing US support for Ukraine and shifting the burden of Ukrainian caretaker from the US to the Europeans. IMO, that's where it rightfully belongs. If that emerges from what appears to be chaos I can probably find some historical examples of sovereign states stirring the diplomatic pot to create an environment ripe for new solutions to an old problem.

Talk about unsolved old problems. There's a similar thing going on in the ME. Trump's announcement that Palestinians cannot remain in Gaza has produced a whole lot of movement by Arab countries with a stake in regional stability to come up with alternative plans for the Palestinian cause. The two state solution where the Palestinians next door to Israel are governed by terrorists that seek the destruction of Israel is, IMO, dead. Heretofore unheard of, Arab states are talking about having no Hamas or PA governing what is now a Palestinian diaspora without a homeland. Hezbollah and Iran have been sidelined. The previous land Palestinians claimed as that is, for all intent and purpose, completely destroyed. Developing and funding a plan to rebuild it is in serious doubt because of costs.

I think it's worth seeing what comes out of these to global trouble spots with both of them presenting seemingly unsolvable problems. Trump has certainly upset the diplomatic apple cart. What comes next isn't entirely clear but I can see a path forward, blurry as it is.

            • Ultimately the Russia-Ukraine outcome is politically irrelevant. The economy either bucks up or it doesn’t.

As a substantive matter it’s relevant, but politically it’s probably about 20th on the issues list.

Immigration is fixed. If the economy is healthy then there’s not much that’s gonna help the Ds.

                • One of the laid off IRS employees, Robert McCabe, told NBC10 he went into work on Thursday and had issues logging in. He and his coworker sat around and waited for instructions. He then received the layoff letter shortly before 11:30 a.m. McCabe said he had been a supporter of President Trump prior to the layoff.

“You know when he talks about government waste and all that, yes, I’m behind it,” McCabe said. “I believe there is a lot of stuff in the government that needs fixing. And that’s part of the reason why I actually wanted to work for the government, actually. To help change. Help change the things that are wrong in the world, you know? I thought that someone with his business acumen would have come in with a fine-tooth comb and actually found it instead of coming in with a wrecking ball and destroying people’s lives for no reason.”

Hard not to feel schadenfreude here but this is the 7th or 8th anecdote from a Trump supporter I've seen where they seem baffled that Trump is just wrecking things instead of dismantling them thoughtfully. I'm like really? Donald Trump? You expected him to carefully weed out the bad employees and make sure the good ones were protected? It was never going to be that.

Heh. Yeah as Dave Weigel said, if the Dems can't conquer Virginia this year like Genghis Khan coming down from the steppes, then they should hang 'em up as a political party.
