DJT is not a good candidate -- but he's a good politician. Say what you will, he managed to win the R primary in 2016 and get elected and come back in 2024 after disgraceful conduct and win with some ease. I think he did a lot of good things in this campaign that Harris just lacked the ability to do.

I actually don't know how much the election swings w/ a replacement R. DJT's base is remarkably durable. I don't doubt that it's a little better, but I dunno how much.

Harris, amazingly, was a better choice than The Chairman. BUT, she's still a bad candidate and the worst "major" politician I've ever seen.

So, I actually think the Ds just need a modest re-orientation. Smooth out some of the rough edges. Check the Progs just a little bit. And they'll be in a pretty good position in 2026 and 2028.

I mean, I stand by my assessment that the next 4 years were going to be a total shitshow no matter who won. That was the only real conviction I had about the worstest election in the history of free elections.

Dems won 4 Senate races in states Trump won. That didn't happen anywhere in 2016 or 2020. It's mainly thanks to a couple hundred thousand Trump voters in Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Arizona not bothering to vote in any race but the Presidency. Those people are highly unlikely to even show up in 2026. Any House Republican that won their race by 5% or less this year has a big target on their back in two years.

Speaking of the House, it's looking like a 221-214 split. 222-213 if Michelle Steel holds on (could know that today). Trump's taking away Gaetz, Stefanik, and Waltz so Johnson's only going to have a 218-214 majority for at least Trump's first few months. That's an even narrower margin than he was working with this year.

Not sure that is true. Would the Republican turnout have been as high without Trump? I think you would have lost a lot of straight ticket R voters if that were the case.

Yeah -- I'm not sure how to assess DJT and his base. I tend to think the outcome is the same regardless with marginal changes in margins.

Whereas I definitely think the Ds could have done better with a better candidate that was actually able to separate themselves from Biden. Eh. It's done.
