              • The confirmation hearings for RFK jr are going to be classic politics. How do the Democrats come out blasting against the son of one of the most beloved political figures in their past? I know the "Kennedy family" has spoken against Jr.s politics, but just hearing Democrats speak badly of a Kennedy should be epic television.

The US wasn’t really “developing” in the year 1900 either. At least not by the standards of the rest of the world at the time. By then, it was technologically and economically at or near the top of the world. Unless by developing you just mean manufacturing-based vs. service-based. I think that the jury is out on which one of those is better.

I think that the OP’s point still stands. We seem to have an example of tariffs having been used in prior eras without creating the economic disaster that is being foretold if we start levying big tariffs again. I’m not convinced that example isn’t relevant.

Edit — does this guy really think that countries like China levy tariffs only because it’s easier than to collect income taxes? That’s just absurd. They levy tariffs to keep their people employed.

                    • IMHO there are good arguments for and against tariffs. The good argument in favor of them is that every economy needs enough manufacturing to employ people whose natural strength is to build things. We need routes to affluence for people that don’t want to spend $100,000 to get a college degree that doesn’t fit them. I’d be more opposed to tariffs if we didn’t have that problem.

                      • Personally I think a final assembly tariff is a good idea.

Companies who want to assemble their products in Singapore, Hong Kong or other places like Seoul, should be told that they have a choice.

                        1. Do the final assembly of your products overseas, and face a 25% tariff when they hit our shores ..

                        or

                        2. Send the parts here, and do the final assembly work in places like Detroit, Dallas, or St. Louis, .. using American factories and people, and avoid the 25% tariff completely.

I think a policy like that is fair.
