  • I’m old enough to remember when cracking down on illegal immigration was the democratic stance and unfettered access to Mexican labor was what republicans supported.

It’s funny how things like that flip (I guess you could throw in NAFTA and a few other things like it).

And the funny thing is, it only helps things if there is affirmation of a cover up. If it’s nothing, then ‘obviously they destroyed the evidence (or hid it and didn’t release it).

Your party promises that we can deport every last one of them, find replacement workers HERE, without food prices rising even a penny. Because REAL Americans yearn to have physically grueling $2/hr jobs where the odds of losing a finger are high.
All major corporations require you to have the proper paperwork and a social security number to get hired. Small businesses can get away with paying people under the table but large corporations can't. I call bullshit on your statement.

As recently as the 1990s we had robust economic growth without inflation, and that was before George W came along and opened up our borders. Before Hart-Celler we didn't have problems with food prices either. There is no evidence that flooding your country with illegals (or even legal migrant workers) lowers prices. If flooding your country with unskilled, uneducated laborers makes your economy better off then Central America should be a paradise.

But illegal immigrants do raise housing prices. You may have noticed that there is a shortage of housing in a lot of areas of the country now. They use up your tax dollars when their kids show up in schools and the school system has to hire translators for those kids. They jack up medical costs in the country by getting emergency room access for free. They use all of the public services that you pay property taxes for. And they consume food too, along with all of the other goods and services that you now claim will skyrocket in price if they are deported. People who live in cities or small towns that have been flooded with migrants have experienced these effects. Nobody has ever said "boy I sure am glad that those ten buses full of migrants showed up in our town." The Martha's Vineyard folks couldn't get rid of them fast enough.

And if you think that's bad, wait until they all get amnesty and you have to pay for all of their means-tested government benefits with your tax dollars .

I don't remember this, but it has been a while.

I do remember that he trashed leakers like Chelsea Manning and he was President when Julian Assange was extradited to the US. His attitude on this subject seems to have changed.

With that said, I'm not holding my breath.

You can walk into any Tyson chicken processing plant right now and basically haul away half the workforce.
Yep. There was a guy, during the first Trump administration living in the Mexicantown area of Detroit. He was married, had his own business, active in his church and a pillar in the community by all accounts. No criminal record. However, his parents were illegal and brought him along as a kid. ICE came and ripped him away deporting him to Mexico.

They do it through employment agencies that do not fill out I-9’s and farm out the workers to businesses who sign a contract and write one check to the employment agency. If immigration gets close, they shutter A-1 Employment Center and it becomes A-2 Employment Center. These companies funnel “independent contractors” as workers to these jobs. I was in hospital admin and a lot of hospitals’ housekeeping is that type of employee agency worker. If you ever come across an unskilled labor employee who cannot speak even basic English, I would bet real money they are not legal because you should be able to become a citizen. It’s a requirement.

The individuals who do it without an employment agency have a buddy who is legit and has a DL and a SS card. That one good DL and one SS card to sign up multiple people. If the IRS gets wind, the actual holder of that SS# just says his stuff was stolen and someone else is using it.

And, of course, a lot work in cash pay businesses (landscaping, agriculture, and construction, for example).

Trump wants to decide who is on Senate committees and wants to avoid having to get Senate approval of cabinet appointees.

He, like all pols, will push any envelope that presents itself. Congress should push back on any perceived encroachment, but they probably won’t.

Please show evidence of the loopholes that you are describing and some data on how many of the employees who are hired this way are illegal immigrants. Employment agencies tend to not be small mom and pop businesses that hire under the table either. I find it hard to believe that these companies' management would make hiring illegals a matter of company policy and risk prison sentences and destruction of their company by doing so, We're talking millions of people being employed this way. Granted, our government has not been harsh on enforcing immigration, but that scale of systemic (and very easily provable) fraud seems implausible to me.

And the people advancing this argument will tell you in the next sentence how minimum wage should be $15/hr with health insurance thrown in for everyone. The people who have been agitating for employees to get paid more are warning us about the possibility of employees getting paid more. This criticism is not coming from a place of intellectual honesty.

The one I heard about (and had no personal knowledge of) had a P.O. Box and no advertised physical address. The issue was never pressed. When I started my hospital admin career, housekeeping staff were hospital employees. Now, I don’t know of one that is. Ditto hotel housekeeping. Etc. Some are above board, but many are not. The way it was/is viewed is that the receiving business didn’t hire any worker. The receiving business signed with an agency and the onus was on that agency with I-9s. The agency said, “we need no I-9s, these are independent contractors”. They also had these illegal workers sign a form that said that IF they are illegal, they would be deported or jailed so they have motivation to keep quiet and work. If the agency was pressed, they shuttered. The agencies closing seemed to happen a lot.

And even if you get caught - like Wal-Mart did with illegal cleaning “contract” employees 15-20 years ago (and getting caught was/is rare), the fines were less than the extra payroll would have cost — even though they tried to “make an example” out of Walmart with an $10million fine iirc (lol).

                          • It’s not really a loophole. Someone is breaking the law. The receiving business says it’s the agency and the agency says it is the worker. The government hasn’t really pressed the issue with going after anyone, though.

Now that I think of it,…As far as providing you proof, no. Not even sure the statute of limitations is over for any alleged knowledge of such things. If you think I’m lying, I’m good with it. In fact, let me say unequivocally that I have no knowledge of illegal alien contract workers in any medical center I have ever worked in. Ever.

                            • The second half of the graph is potentially fake. You can find the original Washington Post story the graph is based on and it was published in 2018. Going from 40% to 50% in a single year doesn't seem plausible to me but I can't definitively prove it's fake at the moment.

                              • The article I pointed to above also shows there's a significant difference between the virginity rates of 18-19 year olds and 24-29 year-olds.

That study's own data show that's fewer than 10% of men between 24-29 are still virgins and that's been relatively unchanged since 2008. The story is really about the high school age population in particular. A lot less people are having sex in high school than they used to.
